Debra,
Had to post to you since this is the day Lance looks to sew up his fifth Tour de France. I just know you have been watching it closely.
He's definitely on my list of sports heroes along with Wayne Gretzky, Jeff Gordon, Nolan Ryan, and Eddie Murray. Every one of these guys is a class act as well as being superstars in their individual sport. Murray had troubles with the press here in Baltimore but that was the fault of the press, and not his. Sorry to rant but I had to defend him on the day he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. I was the recipient of a birthday gift from him when I was about 16 so I know how nice he is.
Anyway.......GOOOOOOOOOO LANCE!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

RE: Hi Trev!

Hi Debbie!!
I am always here just haven't posted as much. Actually I am trying to catch up to your 2000+ posts! I could do that by "bumping" all the posts!! hehehe. You all would kill me!!
The birthday gift is an autographed ball from the 1982 Baltimore Orioles. My parents knew one of the locker room attendants and he told Eddie Murray about me and how my birthday was coming up. About a week later Eddie gave him the ball to give to me. Eddie had started it off by writing "Happy Birthday Trevor, Eddie Murray" in large writing on one side of the ball. Then the ball was passed around to the rest of the team. Most of the players put little personal messages on it along with their names. The ball is covered with maybe 25 or 30 autographs, including a few broadcasters. Cal Ripken Jr., who was just a kid then, is on it along with his father who just died maybe a year ago. Other big names are Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, Murray, and Chuck Thompson who is one of the great broadcasters of all time. One guy who signed it was a broadcaster named Randy Blair. He died of a heart attack weeks later while playing in a charity game.
I have kept that ball in a box in my closet for years. Every once in a while I will pull it down, look at the names on it, and it's the summer of 1982 all over again.

RE: Hi Trev!

Great story Trevor! How special! Not sure how they could fit that many autographs on one ball! What a keepsake especially with some of them gone now. BTW, you have a FEW more posts to catch up to me!:7

It was a great Tour! We don't have OLN so we "watched" the stages via the Web. Tough not hearing Phil and Paul every morning in July. I talked a bit about the Tour on your other post, hadn't seen this one.

The L.A. Times did a great profile on Murray this week. Very complimentary. Said his problems with the press were rooted in the fact that he was just a very private person. What a great birthday gift you received. It's always nice to hear that some great athletes are also great humans.

Hey Debra!
It was a great Tour! Lance is awesome. I missed a chance to meet him last February when he visited a hospital about 5 miles from here. I forgot about it and didn't take off from work.
Murray's problems with the press stem from a 1979 story by writer Dick Young who called Eddie's brothers thugs, basically. He never trusted another press person the rest of his career....

Had to butt in here - LANCE ARMSTRONG RULES!

To be able to come back from a virulent bout with testicular cancer and not only compete in but win the Tour de France five times just makes my jaw drop . . . and gives me hope for what's possible for me if and when I'm ever socked with a real medical condition!

I don't get a channel that covers the Tour De France. I was at my Dad's last night and he turned to his rodeo channel that he likes to watch. TDF was on and they both said "Oh, this is what I want to watch." "This is all they've been covering" and changed the channel. I was thinking, "I do! I do! I want to watch it!"

I don't even know what it is except a bicycle race, but now that I am enjoying cycling more (even though it's indoor) I wanted to watch it.

Andrea

P.S. Trevor, I don't know if you remember but our sons were born a few weeks apart. Email a new pic and I'll do the same for you. [email protected].

P.P.S. And, I tried to email a few pics to you Debbie. I got kicked off the net, and forgot, but this reminded me!

I'm with A-Jock Lance Armstrong RULES!!!

I have OLN and have watched hours and hours of the Le Tour this year just like I always do. I hope he wins six for sure. I also really like Tyler Hamilton and after Lance's heyday is over I'm goin to be rootin for him.

Love

no doubt!

I suspect Texans jump on any chance to party & Lance sure gave them one. I also suspect there are a few New Englanders celebrating Tyler's Tour. But I confess, that I'd love to see Jan give Lance another challenge next year.

Andrea, sometime we'll have a chat about the Tour. It's a 3 week Super Bowl & World Series.
