"Here, let me carry that for you"

RE:

A few years ago, I was in Target to buy this buffet/cabinet for my front entry hall. I had both of my children with me who were 6 months and 2 years at the time.

I lifted the 65 lb box containing the cabinet down from the shelf with no problem. My toddler then walked around to where I was setting the box down on the cart. I proceeded to ask her to please move so I wouldn't hit her in the head with the box.

About this time, a scrawny-looking man happened by and immediately tried to take the box from me. Didn't ask, just started grabbing. I kept telling him I was totally in control, and that I didn't need his help. I knew by looking at him that there was no way he would be able to lift the box if I let go. He continued to wrestle with me (can you believe it?!), so I let go of the box, and guess what? IT WAS TOO HEAVY FOR HIM, AND HE DROPPED IT ON MY TODDLER!!

I wanted to strangle him! He walked sheepishly away as I picked the box off the floor and put it in my cart, then attended to my screaming little girl who had just been crushed by a 65 lb cabinet.

Oh my gosh!! I had the SAME thing happen to me at Dick's!!! I picked up some 40 lb dumbbells (yes, for me!) and the guy was shocked when I picked them up & carried them up front. And I said almost the same thing you did- I said, well if I'm going to be lifting them I hope I can carry them!! The college kid was a bit surprised but looked impressed! ;-)

Aww, come on guys, they're just being polite! I don't mind being asked if I need help, but HATE, when like Natalie, you say you got it and they don't believe you! Lots of experience with that - even by those related to me! UGH.
