Help! Vegetarian wants protein without soy??

How can I be vegetarian and get enough protein without eating much soy? I have been eating 'fake' meat, but they all contain large amounts of soy. What can I eat?
I have a family history of breast cancer; am 39 and am in menapause. Against my heart I have been on plant-based HRT for 3 months purely for oteoperosis prevention. I'd like to go off this soon and just take a bone med.

Thanks everyone for any info/advice.

Rice protein, brewer's yeast, all the non-soy beans. Bee pollen. And of course if you eat animal products, whey protein, dairy, eggs. There are lots of options. Seitan is made with wheat protein. Products made by Quorn (a company) are made with mushrooms, they make nuggest, cutlets, burgers, etc.

You'll be fine.

How much protein do you want to have every day? I agree with Mogambo and I even tried Seitan and found it very tasty...I don't eat any animal protein at all except for occasional whey protein powder...:)...Carole

I eat a lot of eggs, cheese, a lot of lentils and pinto beans and kidney beans each week. I have a huge pot of homemade lentil soup on the go in my fridge all the time, year round. I also keep balance protein bars handy for when I am starving but stuck at the YMCA while my kids take sports classes. There are 15 mg's of protein in one of these bars, very handy. I usually drink a 16 ounce glass of 2% milk each evening to get my supplements down, that doesn't hurt. It would also help you with your calcium requirements. When you are watching TV or a film of an evening, throw the choc bars away and open up a bag of almonds or the nut of your choice an snack away. You'll get healthy fat, some vitamins and protein to complement the other sources of protein in your diet. Almonds are so moreish I can get through a half pound in a sitting.....

What you really need to do is educate yourself. Get a brilliant bok on vegetarian eating that will explain to you how to combine pulses, dairy and vegetables to ensure you meet protein requirements. There is more protein in veggies than we think, but food group combining is the way to go to make sure you get all the essential amino acids every day.

Also, peanut butter!
