Help I think my dog is sick!

Oh my gosh. My 7 month old maltese must be sick. He is acting in ways I've never seen! He is scared of everything. Wants to be by my side more than ever. Doesn't want to play. Doesn't want to chew his bone. Can't sit still. Tail sagging, between his legs. Just started around dinner time. Asks to go outside, then has his tail between his legs and then puts his front legs up on mine so I'll pick him up. Not barking. Thinking back, he did throw up 3 times two days ago (first time) but seemed fine after that. Yesterday went for a run with me. (more like a fast walk for him most of the time :)) He did get spooked at some sheep near the end. Tail between legs. Was tired after his bath.

He's up to date in shots. Has had the kennel cough vaccine and rabies. Any thoughts?

I agree with Phyllis.
My boxer was sick last week. He began with vomiting on Tuesday. I didn't rush him to the vet because dog's get sick. He had an appetite, but continued to vomit his food for 2 more days. I took him and a stool sample to the vet. He was running a low grade fever, no parasites in his stool. They took a x-ray of his stomach to make sure he didn't have something stuck in his stomach.

The vet determined he had a viral infection. She said the rule of thumb for a tummy ache is 2 days. After that, you need to take him in.
Dogs can catch flu bugs. I didn't know that:confused:
My vet put Maximus on antibiotics, gave him a shot to stop the vomiting. He was fine 24 hours later.:)

whenever they start acting strangely, it doesn't hurt to at least CALL the vet. Sometimes (rarely) they'll say to not worry too much about it (they did this when Buster had diarrhea, once they found out he had been eating cat poop), but they will most likely want to see him just to be sure. It will give peace of mind. Maybe he just has the winter blues. :)

I'd at least call the vet. Doggies normally bounce back quickly when they're under the weather, but if he was throwing up a couple days ago and is still not quite right, I'd call. Maybe he ate something you don't know about. Or maybe something outside scared him and he doesn't want to go out. I had a dog when I was a teenager, that all of a sudden didn't want to go out and was all clingy and whatnot. Turned out, the neighbor kids were throwing rocks over the fence at him when he was out :mad::mad:. I wouldn't want to go out if you were throwing rocks at me, either. My dad talked to their parents and it seemed to fix that problem. So, its possible something scared or hurt your dog, or he could be sick. Call the vet. If something is wrong, and you don't, you'll be mad at yourself. Better safe than sorry. Good luck and best wishes.

My dog was totally lethargic and began to lose the fur in her tail.

She just laid around and did not want to play, etc.

Finally she developed a limp and I had to carry her everywhere (A 60 lb. border collie).

I took her to the vet and she not only had a ruptured ACL ligament, routine bloodwork develope an underactive thyroid.

She is now on synthroid for doggies and she is a different animal. Her eyes now sparkle and she plays a lot with her doggie brother.

Bloodwork in a dog can reveal many problems.

I never thought my Tiffany would have hypothyroidsm.

The fact that he's clinging to you and asking to be picked up means he's trying to tell you something. Mommy, take me to the doctor, I don't feel well!!
Do it now - with animals you never know and they can get deadly sick very quickly.

I wanted to add a couple of things. Your dog is still a baby and also he is a small breed so I think you should get him to a vet sooner rather than later. You seem to think his behavior has changed and also he has been vomiting. Yup definitely call the vet. I think he is telling you he doesn't feel well.

Your baby is definitely telling you something. Let us know what you find out after you've been to the vet. Hope he is okay.

I woke up at 3 am tempted to go check on him but I didn't (he sleeps in his kennel). About a half hour later, my youngest daughter came in with a sore throat, temp and coughing a bit. (I had to get her from school yesterday even though she wasn't that sick yesterday.) She's worse today, has been sleeping all morning while Bear seems back to normal. Had a good poop, a few pees, and ate and drank. He is chewing his bone again. Barking again. I was so sure I'd take him in to the vet this morning but now I'm thinking no. Do you think he was acting that way because my daughter was sick???

Something could have happened to scare him. Has there been a change in the house at all? New person, commotion of some kind, a sleep over for the first time... Dogs get spooked by weird things. But, I'd still get him to the vet to make sure all is well. Better safe than sorry.

Boy, I just hate when they do that to you--get you all worried and then the miraculous recovery. I'm so risk adverse when it comes to my dog that I would probably still want the vet to look at my pup to confirm the obvious: he's okay.
