You made it through day six! Whoo hoo! It only gets easier now. Within a year, you'll have days on end where you don't even think about smoking. That sounds like a long time, but it's not as bad as it seems, because every day you'll look bad and think . . . well, it wasn't as hard as it was yesterday.
For me, the next step was getting through things I had never done without smoking. Things you don't do often. Every time I did something I had never done before without smoking, I would think about it again. Oddly enough, I wasn't tempted. I just thought about smoking a lot at times like that.
Here's something funny -- to this day, I still LOVE the smell of smoke. Some people can't stand to be around someone who smokes while they're quitting, but it actually helped me. My husband smoked for several years after I quit, and it always smelled sooooo good. I still walk through those little crowds of people smoking outside of buildings and take a good, deep breath. I don't want to smoke, but it does smell good to me. I have also gotten so sensitive to the smell of smoke, that I can smell a smoker's house when I ride by one on my bicycle, and I can smell someone smoking in a car from my own car behind them.
Oh, here's another plus. Some people think that getting your sense of smell back will make you want to eat more. Ha! It's just the opposite! Because you can actually taste the subtleties of food, you will find yourself more satisfied by it, rather than eating more trying to get the taste you remember. Sort of like smoking one of those really low tar light cigarettes -- you smoke twice as many or draw twice as hard trying to get the flavor from it.
You're doing super!!! Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I've ever done, and I've lost close to a hundred pounds four times in my life. (Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm a mess. Most of my major accomplishments in life have been having to STOP doing something bad rather that starting to do something good.) Losing weight and maintaining a loss was like climbing Everest in high heels, but it was nothing compared to quitting smoking. You're on your way. Keep checking in. We're here for you.
