Help...DVR or TIVO?

dmd

Cathlete
Okay, so I am finally caving into the thought that I may need one. There are too many shows in our family that can't be watched. So, tell me you guys should I get DVR through my cable company or a TIVO?

What is easier to use?

What is less expensive?

Is there a big difference?

Thanks in advance. deb:)

What is easier to use?
They are both about equal as far as ease.

What is less expensive?
Our dvr is an extra 10 bucks a month for me. TIVO, ????

Is there a big difference?
Tivo, i beieve you can take off comercials. DVR, as far as i have figured out , you can't..

It really just depends on what you want. I think that they are basically the same thing. I have a tivo because we have directv. Check with your cable company and satellite company to see which is cheaper and what they all offer! HTH

Definetely, definetely DVR!!!! They are pretty much equal in price but with TIVO you need to have a phone jack installed next to the tv. It's a pain in the butt. Granted, you can take it with you when you move and the DVR you have to re-sign up for with your cable company, but I find DVR much easier to use and it doesn't change the way your tv displays channels/listings/etc. I compared and compared after I moved again and was deciding whether or not I should purchase TIVO rather than sign up again for DVR and ended up getting the DVR again. It's fantastic!!

I have a TIVO from DirectTV and it costs $5 a month for the TIVO service....I love it...:)

Thanks for the link Susan, I always thought my TIVO was a DVR...

Thanks to you all for giving me your thoughts on this. Do you find you use it allot? If I'm correct, you pre-program what shows you usually watch and your dvr will tape that show every time it shows right?

Also, will dvr ( through cable company) save shows for a while or are they erased after it is viewed?

Gosh, everything I hear about dvr is positive...such an indulgence.}(

Hi Deb,

I have DIVO and I love it:)

You can pause regular TV shows with DIVO. You record 100 hour of shows and and watch it at a later time. You record different channels at the same time. Divo is really easy to use!

Hope this helps:)

You can set up on DirectTV TIVO what is called a "Season Pass" then it records the program every time it is on, even if the time changes, or it airs on another night. You can keep the programs recorded on the TIVO until you choose to delete them...:)

Hi Belinda...

Okay, now I'm really confused. So, DIVO is a machine I can purchase? Or, is it a service? Gawd, I am such a techno dweeb. Thanks for your input.

Deb, I don't know anything about TIVO, but we have a DVR from comcast. I love it, but I just wanted to let you know that (at least on ours) you can only record two shows at once. Also, if you have two shows set to record at the same time and want to watch something else while they are recording you have to watch another TV. There are only two tuners on ours so there is a max of recording two shows at once or recording one show and watching another at once.

On our machine, we have to watch the show we are recording or watch another prerecorded show. That is a downside, but not unbearable.

You can purchase the TIVO service that records two shows at once.

Good Luck!

I'm so spoiled by TIVO that I get crankly when I watch a live show and can't FF through the commercials. I've been known to pick up the remote and hit FF and my husband will look at me and say, "What are you doing?" and then laugh.

>DVR is the machine. TIVO is the service. I've never heard
>of DIVO. It must be something new. :)

of cours I meant TIVO, sorry I typed it wrong:D

I do the exact same thing Susan!...:)

Tivo is a service, however, neither Roadrunner or the sattelite services release it without a box, otherwise it wiould be accessable to all that have the basic services from either org. The box from roadrunner runs an additional $ 5 .

Same here. I love my TIVO! It's like the commercial said, "I don't know how I ever lived without it". I could never watch all the things I want to without it. Life's too short to waste waiting for commercials to be over.

Another rave here for DVRs/TIVO. Like others have said, they're essentially the same thing, with a few feature differences. We have a DVR and use it all.the.time. I love being able to FF through commercials! I wish I could do that with live TV!

HI Karin,
Thanks for that information! What if you only want to record one show? Could you them use the same t.v.? This is so informative...thank you!
