HELP! Blister preventing exercise!

Hey all,
I recently purchased new workout shoes. After working out in them three times, I got the most horrible blister. It is so bad, I can't wear shoes with a back. What can I do, workout wise, until it heals? I feel like a sloth because I haven't done anything since Wednesday. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Klaudia

Band-Aid makes some special blister bandages that are meant to be worn over a blister. They work GREAT, so long as the blister is not too large. They stay on very well, but be sure to follow the directions. After some very long runs they are the only things that have allowed me to get my feet into ANY kind of shoe at all.

In the meantime, try some yoga, ("power" yoga can be quite a workout), pilates, lifting lighter weights with more reps and less rest between the sets---lots of push-ups, pull-ups, tricep dips, etc. You could probably even get away with doing some hi/lo without your shoes, although I wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis. Also, if you access to any kind of pool swimming or water aerobics would be perfect.

HTH,
Mattea:)

Hi Klaudia,

I've used the "blister" bandage from Band-aid and it works like a charm. It's really squishy and stays on for a couple of days to promote healing.

How's P90X going?

Sally

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I'm off to Target to buy those band-aids. And do a pilates workout-thanks Mattea!

Sally, I'm not up to the P90X yet-but my husband is diligently using them daily! I'm so glad he's working out. Now he's more understanding of my fitness purchases/obsessions:)

Hi Klaudia,

First, make sure you put lots of polysporin on your blister so it won't get infected. What I usually do with new shoes (of any kind) is put a bandaid on the spots where I think blisters could potentially develop. This is a great preventative method!!! Also, at my marathon training groups the first think they tell you is never to run or work out in socks that are 100% cotton. One would think that since cotton is a natural fibre it would be great for excercise, but the truth is that when cotton gets wet it stays wet (or damp) for an extended period of time, and the last thing you want is a wet cloth to be rubbing up and down on your skin. You should consider getting socks that are a blend of cotton and technical fibres which allow sweat to evaporate much faster. The drier your feet, the less chance you will have of developping blisters. Having said that, I would still use the preventative bandaid method when you have new shoes, because if a blister really wants to develop, even technical socks won't help you.

Take care,

ady

Buy the thickest socks that Thorlo makes, and wear them with a cushioned aerobic shoe. I rarely have blisters, and I do eight to ten hours of cardio a week. I don't think there are any socks like the ones Thorlo makes, and I wore them when I was training for the marathon.
