Help Assembling Valor Squat Stand

What is the metal hook thing for? And the square black plastic piece? I see from the "directions" that they go on the top J-hook part of the stand but I can't tell what purpose they serve. There's already a part that screws in and holds the stand at different heights, so I don't know what else you could use the metal hook thing for. And I'm totally baffled by the square plastic piece that fits between the two upright posts.

I'm assuming they are not purely decorative ...

I had the same problem today. AND I just figured it out ! I did not have it installed correctly.

Take the black safety stop and slide it over the bottom support pole with the click piece on the inside of the pole and click it in place. Then put the square black piece over the bottom support pole top and then slide the top piece in the bottom support pole and then lock it with the metal clip.
