Heel Problem

Hello,

I'm not sure if anyone out there can give me some insight into a recent problem with my left heel.

I noticed this the other day. I thought I had a rock stuck in the heel of my left shoe, digging into the back of my heel. So I stopped the work-out, checked my shoe, but no rock. When the problem continued, I checked the shoe, and thought there must be a defect with the shoe. So today I tried using another pair of shoes, but I still have this problem.

It happens particularly when for example I'm stretching my hamstring with my heel flexed. It feels as if something is jabbing into the back of my heel. Its not really painful, just uncomfortable.

Could I have pulled a muscle/tendon back there? I don't remember doing an exercise where I strained my heel or hurt myself, so I'm really at a loss.

Just thought I would post this before going to the doctor to see if anyone else has experienced this or knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks a lot!

Melanie

Maybe you have a bone spur in your heel? I fight that issue. It can feel like someone is sticking a needle in my heel. Sometimes it'll just go numb/asleep. It aggravates plantar facitis (soooo not spelled right) in my right foot. Stretching helps w/ the PF issue. There is no way to fix a bone spur, except surgery. Dr said that is the worst, worst case scenario route, bc it is often worse than the problem. Rest, and ice when it bugs you. High impact and improper shoes can make it worse, too. It aggravates the tissues around it, causing pain, especially when pounded on, jumped on, ran on, plyo'd on, etc. Hope in feels better soon!!! I'll have several good days or weeks, then it'll decided to bother me again for a few days or weeks, then calm back down. I just deal with it.

How does it feel when you walk barefoot? esp in the morning? if it feels like someone is stabbing you through the heel, a bone spur definitely sounds possible. if ice, anti inflammatories, and stretching through the achilles doesn't help then check in with a good podiatrist. shoe inserts or custom insoles may help. some podiatrists are also skilled with injections of local anesthetics and corticosteroids in small amounts. but most of all, listen to your feet and don't hesitate to see a podiatrist...plantar fasciitis can be very painful and persist for a long time if aggravated rather than treated!

Thank-you both for your responses. In response to Julie - I don't feel this problem at all when I'm walking barefoot - it only really happens when I have my work-out shoes on. I think I will schedule an appointment with a podiatrist because I don't want the problem to get worse. Thanks again both of you for your advice! Melanie

That sounds like the best idea! From your description, it sounded more like it was in the back of your heel not the bottom, which sounds to me like a possible problem with your achilles tendon and you don't want to mess around with that!

Hope it's nothing serious! Do let us know how you made out!
