Healthy Activities

I'm always looking for new healthy activites and was wondering what activity have you incorporated into your routine that has made the biggest healthy impact on you, healthy body or mind? Of course incorporating exercise may top most of our lists but what part of exercise, for instance interval training, strength training, running, etc. It could even be healthy eating - which is my number one healthy activity and that is/was incorporating a green juice or smoothie into my diet every day.

How about you all what healthy activity has made the biggest impact or difference to you? And what was that impact?

I don't know if this counts, but I keep a thankful journal and it has completely changed my life. I love life so much more when I am focused on being thankful. My workouts are better, I eat better, I relate to my kids better, etc. That is the healthiest thing I do for myself. And, when I don't do it for awhile, I notice a difference in a negative way.

Other than that, I love to dance with my kids. It gets our hearts beating (they are 3) and sweaty...on these short, cold winter days - it is great to move with them!! They also know Cathe by name!! They love her as much as I do! ha

Yoga

It realigned my neck. It has helped with my IBS. It has helped with PTSD flashbacks (not a cure but more like treatment.) It restored flexibility. Its also good for when you have insomnia. It helps with weightloss by stimulating the thyroid and parathyroid. It restored the spaces in my spine and gave me about 1/2 inch of height I had lost to a car accident when I was 11 years old. I'm now actually 5'2", I've been 5'1.5" since I was 11. I went head first into the dash board, I was not in my seat belt. It always helps when I'm in a plateau (note to self, do the yoga!)

Hiking. I love hiking with my husband and just getting out in nature, watching the birds, looking for wild life, and talking. Out in the mountains it is just us and nature. It is our time together and we walk at a snails pace just taking our time.

Jennifit - I've attempted a thankful journal a few times and just haven't stuck to it. This may be just the inspiration I need!

Rapidbreath - That's amazing! When you say realign your neck, do you mean with a chiropractor? I'm curious cuz I have some of the same issues (thyroid, IBS) and would love to get help with them.

Janie1234 - Hiking... Love It. I recently took up photography just so I could record these precious moments!

Thanks everyone!

I recently took up photography just so I could record these precious moments!

I bought a while back one of those indestructible Olympus stylus cameras (water proof and shock proof) and I love taking pictures during my hikes. It is amazing what you see when you walk and take your time to look around you. Here are a few pictures I took last week.

Although I get a lot of exercise in a lot of different ways, and it changes all the time, the thing that has stayed consistent has been my walking. I don't have a vehicle, never take public transit and rarely take a cab. There's only one way I get around and that's the power of da feet. My job is 3.5k from my house, so just walking to and from work every day burns about 500-600 calories. So even if I skip a workout, I'm still getting low impact, healthy exercise. It tends to give me a permanent tan on my face, even in winter! It has been proven that people that have lost a lot of weight and have kept it off most often use walking as their main source of exercise. I wouldn't say it's my main source of exercise (as really, I just consider it my means of getting around) but it is definitely the foundation of my fitness.

I agree completely! I'm not always capturing such lovely images as janie1234 posted and usually don't even bring a camera but walking outdoors is my #1 healthy activity. Starting my day with a walk and seeing the sun rise is a gift I try to give myself as often as possible. Going out for a walk after dinner was a big help for me in losing weight because it got me past "the hungries" and was a great stress reliever at the same time. That's not so appealing at this time of year when it's dark, but I still do it a few days a week.

A daily green smoothie (sometimes more!) is one change that I did as well.

I will occasionally (not often enough!) do an at-home spa day:

I unplug the phone, (try to!) stay off the Internet, not have any 'to-do' list or obligations for the day (no class prep or corrections!), and indulge in things like the following:

facial steam (put some Swiss Kriss herbal tea--which is supposed to be for constipation, but I never use it for that--in some boiling water in a big bowl, lean over the bowl with a towel draped over your head and let the stem open your pores for several minutes).
I follow this with some kind of pore cleaning mask (sometimes I do a series of different masks, with a toner in between to get the skin's PH back to natural. I'll do one that's a clay-based pore cleaner, one that's a fruit-acid based exfoliant).

Then a body brush scrub followed by a hot bath with some bath salt mixture I've made up (celtic sea salt, clay, different essential oils and/or ginger), while listening to some Francis Cabrel music or a book on MP3.

Then I lotion up, put on my favorite lounging clothes, and relax the rest of the day.

Rapidbreath - I missed the "Yoga" part (duhh). Now I get it. I just started doing yoga a couple weeks ago. Have you ever seen "Inhale"? Probably not a good place to start with yoga, but the guy (can't think of his name) is so interesting I couldn't help but pay attention.

Thanks for pics everyone, they are awesome!

Kathryn - that sounds fantastic!

OK, that sounds like heaven! What a great idea!!

Thank everyone! Morning star those are stunningly beautiful!!! Today is beautiful like spring in the dead of winter, . .you pics make me want to go for a hike!

Thanks Janie! I think my favourite photos are on the second page, of the Grotto, although the frogs on the third page are awfully cute!

Thanks everyone!

I had a chiropractor for several years to help with the PT. But, no the yoga fixed my neck by strengthening muscles I didn't know were weak. It balanced me out. So, it was like a chiropractor fixed it but without the chiropractor.:D
