Cathe,
I have started getting headaches when weightlifting and I was was wondering if you could explain why. They are very severe where I need to stop. Any suggestions or advice?

Sorry, I'm not Cathe (or a Dr/nurse) but the first thing that came to my mind was high blood pressure. Do you have any history of it (or family history)? If the headaches are severe you should definitely see a Dr. A friend of mine was having migraine type headaches once or twice a week and discovered she has very high blood pressure - she's 28, thin, eats healthfully, and is active, now she's on blood pressure meds and no more headaches. Weight training raises your bp temporarily so if its at all high to begin w/ it could be causing your headaches.

I hope it's something simple like a hydration issue but you should see a dr. for a diagnosis.

Just my 2 cents, as well. I'm neither a specialist or MD -- but I do read alot. I agree that it would be good to get checked out and make sure it's not high blodd pressure first, and if it's not, then I would highly recommend the book, YOUR BODY'S MANY CRIES FOR WATER. It could be a dehyration thing. Again, I'm not Cathe and this is strictly opinion.:)

They can also be tension headaches caused from tight muscles in the back and shoulders. Be sure you stretch after all of your weight sessions. I had the same problems and using one of Cathes stretching routines has helped tremendously!

Are you prone to headaches, or migraines to begin with? If not, I would definately follow the advice of the others and see your doctor.

Be sure you are breathing properly. Many people tend to hold their breath when weight lifting, which can cause headaches. Be sure you are exhaling on the exertion and inhale on the lowering. Also be sure you're lifting the appropriate weight. You can frequent many gyms and see particularly guys trying to lift too much weight and their faces are turning red and they look like their head is going to pop. Too much weight! Be sure you are well hydrated, before and during your workout, as well. If you still experience the problem, then you should definitely see a doctor.

I'm not Cathe, but I am a personal trainer, do stop and don't lift and see your doctor. There are many may causes of a headache, this could be high blood pressure only when lifting, tensing your neck or gritting your teeth when you lift, having had some type of back of the head or neck trauma, bone alignment, we all twist our back or neck and here that pop and feel that release, our bodies are usually really good at getting us inline, but sometimes do to stress or activity our bodies can't move that bone 1/100th of an inch back to where it was, and this will cause a lot of pressure or sever headaches, your electrolytes being out of wack, or PMS or other hormone cycle are some of the causes.

And if you have migraines on occasion, that puts a whole new light on things.

But do get checked this isn't something that should be ignored, or brushed off to the side and hope it goes away. This can be very serious and you don't want to mess with your health in this way. Take the time to see a doctor explain how the headache feels, you may even want to write down every detail about the headache you can remember, before you go to the doctor, as it's a lot easier at home then trying to remember everything for the doctor. Also tell them each exercise you were doing and when you started to feel the headache come on and what exercise you had to stop doing because it got too bad. This will help pinpoint who or what is causing the headache. Or it be how heavy your weights are, as you maybe just out maxing your body with the weights, and it's just telling you, it can't do that much. I don't know what you're lifting compared to how much you weigh, so it's just one of the possibilities.

Good luck, and I hope it's just something very simple and easily taken care of.
