Have you used Ralph Lauren Suede?

Hello -

I have a question for anyone who has ever painted with the Ralph Lauren Suede paint.

I called their 800 number and nobody was home!

My question:

The directions say to paint the first coat with a roller, and on the second coat you use the paint brush to make the Xs. But on a fresh wall, where paint soaks in , should I do two coats with the roller and make the third coat the Xs?

Thanks!

Ralph Lauren makes paint? Wow. What is speacial about the paint? Why would they ask you to paint x's? Just wondering. dmd

I haven't used the Suedes but LOVE LOVE LOVE the regular paints. I
would go to Home Depot & ask the guy in the paint department to tint a primer to a shade similar to your suede color. This will save your suede paint. Or ask the paint guy's opinion about that second coat.

Just out of curiosity, what color suede are you using? I've used 4 different colors in my house & will probably use 3 or 4 more!

DMD--Ralph Lauren paints are sold in NJ at Home Depot. The colors are very rich--as Christopher Lowell would say you can't be afraid of color in your home. I have used 4 different colors in my home & then used a less expenseive supposedly good quality paint for my ceilings. Let me just say that paying an extra $5-$10 a gallon for Ralph paints is well worth it. The coverage is so much better than anything I have ever used -- having lived in 5 different homes in my adult life, I've used a lot of paint. They ask you to paint x's with the suede paint so that the texture comes out to look like real suede.

Oh! That is such a good idea about the primer. I wish I had thought of that BEFORE I went ahead and put the first coat down. But we're only doing one wall, so I am not using too much paint anyway.

I haven't done the ceilings - I'm too lazy. But what did you do with the door trims, closet doors, baseboards, and window trims? Did you make them lighter or darker than your walls? I'm kind of at a loss because everything that isn't painted is white.

We're doing suede almond willow in the sitting area of our bedroom. It's like a buff beige - rich but not too strong.

I colorwashed our bedroom with RL Poplar Island and a light brown beneath it. I was overwhelmed with the color at first, but now that the furniture is in, it's not so shocking and I am really starting to like it. When I get the window treamtents up and some artwork, I think the walls will be neutralized even more.

Out our way, in the DC area, the RL paint really isn't that much more that the Behr paint. Even the glazes and texturized paint aren't outageous - I think we paid $29.95 for a can of Suede paint.

Anyway, my husband is so excited about the textures and faux finishes that he has already picked the denim texture for me to do in his office!

Thanks for reading my post!

Good luck with this. Friends of mine tried to do the faux suede but the Ralph Lauren paint dried too fast - they said it look horrible and uneven. They talked to a professional interior painter and he said that Ralph lauren paint isn't good for faux styles and in general, isn't considered a quality paint. He recommended Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. My friends ended up scrapping the whole idea and just rolled it on. Hopefully you have better luck with it.

Hi Susan, I don't know the answer to your question but a friend of mine did this and her walls look fantastic! She did not do this on a fresh wall so don't know how many coats she did - it was on a remodel. She used a carmel color and I can not tell you how beautifully they turned out. I had never seen anything like it!

Gee, that really IS disappointing about your friends. The directions say the first coat is suppose to look uneven and streaky, so I'm not in panic yet.

I hope I have better luck too - thanks!

I stuck with traditional white (Behr Ultra Pure White) for my woodwork in my bedroom office & family room. It looks great with the dark hunter green in the bedroom & biscuit in the family room. I can't remember the name of the color I used in the office but it's very light, almost the color of butter.

I'm going to use one of the reds for my formal living room. I can't wait! My husband has let me go wild with picking the colors. I'm trying to keep a theme but I'm not even sure what the theme is except that I'm using all RL paints!

Our house is a ranch style (one floor), so jokingly my DH suggested we have a cowboy and indians theme, like a wild west kind of thing going on. For a laugh, we call our house the "Almosta Ranch".

Well, rustic style furniture and chandeliers made out of deer antlers is just too way over the top for me, so I'm trying to keep the furnishings to Mission style, Arts and Craftsy stuff and Stickley style things, with Native American accents and decorations, southwestern style rugs, Western and Native American-themed artwork and such. Lots of wood, and weathered trunks and stuff. We'll see how it goes. But I don't think the white trim fits in, but there's so much of it, I'm afraid to undertake stripping all the paint off the wood, etc.

So, a lot of the Ralph Lauren colors and finishes fit right in with what I'm trying to do.
