Has anyone ever had cortisteriod shots (long)

Cathlete
I had to have three horrible shots in my back today, in spinal column and muscles. I absolutely am refusing anymore of those things in the future, OMG they hurt so much my dh was handing me tissues through the entire procedure.

I asked the doctor how long it would be before I could start exercising again, and he said he wasn't sure just yet., to take it easy for a few more days. Yep, it's official, I reached a limit where I wanted to scream...but instead said, whatever you say doc...just patch me up and let's get me better...I miss working out so badly...

Since I started exercising with Cathe, I've turned into an exercise addict, I love it and can't get enough of it. Since I can't workout now, I thought I'd get a head of myself and have some new videos ready for when I get the green light. I ordered Billy Blanks - Amped, and am going to order one more of Cathe's dvds, not sure which one yet. Also, I think I'm going to get a new step. I have the reebok one, but I think the original step will fit me better, because it's longer and wider. I have high hopes that I'll be working out with all of you again soon...

I'd love to hear anyone's input on these shots though.

Sorry for venting:(

I had two (at separate times) for a frozen shoulder. Yes, they hurt like a hell. And just a warning: they can make you have breakthrough bleeding. I did, and it scared me to death, because no one had warned me. I went to my gyno, and after a lot of questions, I recalled the shot. She told me she was almost positive that was what it was, but I still had a biopsy (which came out negative) because I was so freaked.

I attended a seminar at a health club that was about shoulder injuries/problems after that, and I kept waiting for the doctor to mention the possible side effects of cortisone injections in women. When I brought it up, he kind of laughed it off and said that, while it was true, doctors other than gynos usually don't go into "that area." Then, he got a sheepish look on his face and said he was sorry. I told him that he might want to mention it to the next woman he suggested that treatment, because it can be very upsetting when something so unexpected happens.

Sorry, to rant, but it still ticks me off!

Hope everything goes well with you. The shots did help with my pain, so that I was able to do some physical therapy and improve my condition.

Hi Carrie,

Like TeTe, I have had the shots in my shoulder. Yes, the shots were very painful. The first one worked. By the next day, the shoulder pain (which had been very intense) was gone completely. After a while (maybe two or three months) it wore off, and the pain returned. The doctor gave me another shot, but the second one did not work nearly as well. The pain did not go away like before and I continued to have problems, so my doctor sent me to have an MRI and then on to physical therapy, which I just recently completed. I am still not back to normal but am doing my own version of PT and am slooooowly seeing some improvement, but I have to modify my workouts. I will probably need to have surgery anyway, but they wanted to try PT first.

I am sorry for you and the back problems you have been having, and I cannot believe how painful those shots must have been in the spinal column. Ouch! I hope this does the trick for you. When I got the first shot and the pain was suddenly gone, my doctor told me to be careful not to overdo and to take it easy for a while. It is very frustrating, as you are well aware.

I hope the shots take care of your problem and you are back to normal--and back to Cathe--soon!:) :) And I will keep my fingers crossed that more shots are not necessary. Please be careful, go easy for a while, and take care of yourself.

Have fun choosing your new DVD and enjoy your new step if you decide to get it. Do you have the newer Reebok step with the "risers" that snap on and off?

MissL

ETA I did not have any of the problems that TeTe had with breakthrough bleeding. But I have had a hysterectomy and that may make a difference.

TeTe,

Don't worry, rants are always welcomed:)
I am so sorry about your experience. That must have been extremely scarey. I am very glad that the biopsy ended up being negative. I would have been freaked out too. Thank you for your support. Did you have to do PT for long? Are you able to do regular movements or do you still have to modify?

Hi MissL

What happened? Did you tear the rotator cuff? The "S" word (surgery) scares me to death, especially when it gets close to any joint area. Thank you for crossing your fingers for me. I really don't want anymore shots. How long were you in PT?

I think I have the newer version of the Reebok step. It has two grey block risers. I didn't know there was another version.

Thank you for sharing your experience, it really helps relieve some stress of "not knowing". I will be thinking of you as well. I hope you feel better soon. And I hope you don't need surgery.

Take care:)

I have never had these shots personally, but the Doctor I work for does them for patients quite often. The patients have a love/hate feeling about them, because they are so painful to get, but they feel the effects are so wonderful. It is a good, non-narcotic option for pain relief but can't be used too frequently. Patients actually request these shots!!

The only side effects that people complain about are some weight gain/fluid retention. Steroids can mess with your blood sugar so you'll want to keep an eye on your diet and watch the sugar (and salt) if you don't already. Of course, it will vary depending on which steroid your MD used. And if this is a one-time thing for you, you probably won't have any trouble.

Oh great, more weight/fluid retention:( I was just looking around the web, trying to find a good solid diet/nutrition regimen to follow, but all I could really find is the book, "You on a Diet" and "Bob Greene, The Best Life Diet" or something like that. Have you heard of these, or could you recommend something?

I already need to lose major pounds, I can't afford to put the extra added stress on my back.

Thanks for giving me heads up:) I really appreciate it. For now, I definately am going to eat as clean as possible, as much fun as that sounds;(

Take care:)

Carrie,

There was no specific event that caused my injury, so the doctor said it was probably "overuse." The MRI showed a bone spur on the underside of the collar bone. B/c I have a lot of inflammation in the rotator cuff, the bone spur cuts into it and causes a lot of pain. The PT was an attempt to reduce the inflammation, using various exercises as well as a couple of machines. I went for about three weeks but wasn't seeing much improvement, so they decided to stop the PT and refer me back to the doctor--who will most likely send me to a surgeon. If they do surgery it will just be to go in and scrape off the bone spur, so not as bad as it sounds.

The problem I'm having now is that DH had hernia surgery about three weeks ago and is finally able to get around okay without my help. My chocolate lab, Buddy (pictures below on picturetrail) has a cruciate ligament tear and needs surgery, and I have had to wait until DH recovered enough b/f I scheduled that. So Buddy will go in for a TPLO on Friday, and his post surgery care will be pretty intense for at least 8 weeks and will take a full 3-4 months b/f he is completely okay. He weighs 104, and I need to be able to assist him in getting around and up and down the stairs. Also, I figure if I put my surgery off long enough and keep up the PT on my own, I might be able to avoid it altogether. :)

Aniwaze, I'm sorry this is so long and I didn't mean to digress. I read your earlier post about going through that episode and passing out, and WOW, that must have been really scary. I am happy to hear that it wasn't something more serious. Not that your back problem isn't serious, but it sounded like something a lot worse than that. I do hope a second round of shots isn't necessary for you.

The Reebok Step I have is about four inches shorter than the original step and has a sort of "L" shaped gray block riser on each end. I like it a lot b/c it is easier to manipulate and store. I also have one of the bigger ones with the two large black risers on each end, but I don't use it much at all.

Well, this is waaay longer than I intended. Take care of yourself, Carrie. And keep us informed on how you're doing.

I've had two shots. I've had one in my shoulder and one in my knee. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks and am hoping/requesting for one in my elbow (have tennis elbow). I've had great luck with these shots so far, without any side effects, corrected all my problems. The shots I've had have not been that painful, just uncomfortable. Hopefully yours will help.:)

I have to admit, I wasn't as diligent with the PT as I should have been. I still don't have full range of movement, but it has really improved since I started working out and doing weights over the last few years. I sometimes have to to side lateral raises and other shoulder work seperately (one side at a time).

But it is SOOO much better than it used to be.
