Hardcore Kickbox Circuit with Janis Saffell

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have this workout and have they tried it? I previewed it on collagevideo.com and I thought it looked good. However, one person has said that they don't like Janis Saffell's kickboxing.

I thought I should get more opinions before I rule it out.

So far my future purchase will include:
Squeeze
Powerstrike 4 (with Ilaria)
Tracey Staehle Sweatfest cardio (maybe)

I am looking for good kickboxing workouts that are doable in limited space.

I have Janis Saffell's Complete workout where she does kickboxing and Tai Chi and I like it. It's a bit different, but I like it. Where are you getting Powerstrike 4? I have a Powerstrike, but there's no number on it.

IMO opinion this is a great workout. janis and her boyfriend could do a tad better with cueing but overall its a good workout. during cardio they use weight gloved(optional) and take those off to use light handweights for functional compound movements. its a good interval workout. IIRC-they show a modifier but i can't remember

i also have that one with tai chi(she works with scott cole) a more slower paced workout but its REALLY good for active rest and almost like moving meditation. i really can't get into tai chi but this one i do like.

the others you listed i don't know much about sorry :(

Hi,

I don't know what serie it is but somebody told me about Powerstrike 1, 2, 3 and 4 and mentioned Ilaria in one. It's the only one I can find on collagevideo.com, so I am assuming that it is 4. The full title of the DVD is PowerStrike with Ilaria Montagnani.

I actually JUST finished HK! :) I really LOVE this workout, especially Guillermo's sections. It is really fun and isn't as intense as Cathe, but you still get a great workout. This is the one I pull off of the shelf when I'm in a funk but I want to have a good time and NEED to workout because the time just flies by. The only section that I don't care that much for is Janis's second combo; it just isn't intense and my HR drops quite a bit so I do my own thing during it. I don't really know much about the others, either, but have fun shopping!!! :)

Missy

I like this one a lot, too, but I would suggest looking for it at Walmart or Ross, where you can get it for about $6. She's not as intense as Cathe but it's still a good intermediate workout.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Powerstrike 4 is the only PS being carried at Collage. The others you can buy direct from Ilaria (or at least you could before), and I think they're only on VHS.

Marie

Marie- You are correct about Powerstrike. I just wanted to chime in that I have Powerstrike 1 & 2 and LOVE THEM!!!!!!! It is more low impact than like KPC but I am still drenched in sweat when I finish just not much jumping which is a nice change for the body. I don't have 3 or 4 but from what I've read they aren't as advanced as the first two. You can still order them from Ilaria but only available on VHS but they are worth it. :)

I have the Janis HK. I like it and agree it is not real intense. Guillermo's accent makes me smile and the workout overall is fun.

As far as Tracey, I think the Cardio Sweatfest I have read is good. But I tried her High Intensity Kickbox challenge and was highly disappointed at it was not really intense in any way to me...

I also have a Powerstrike, either 2 or 3 and those are very good....:)

Powerstrike 3 is available on VHS or DVD.

As to the original question, I like 3 of the 4 kickboxing sections of Hardcore Kickbox Circuit (Janis's 2nd combo is too awkward to me). That gives me 21 minutes of kickboxing if I want a short cardio session before weights. It's chaptered nicely so you can skip sections you want to skip. I'll do the circuit workout as is if I want a light day. It's fun, but it's not a serious workout to me.

I have HKC but have only done it once. It's not bad - I like Safell fine - but as others said, it's not as intense, so I usually reach for KM or KPC. Now I've added CTX to my collection and I *love* the kickbox workout on that one. Great for a day when you're short on time.

I do have Powerstrike 4 and feel the same - it's not one that I reach for. I found that one to be a little boring - not enough change-up in the routine for my taste. From the comments I have read, it sounds like one of the earlier Powerstrikes would be a better investment.

I just bought TS's Cardio Sweatfest and CIA 2705: Absolute Kickboxing with Kimberly Spreen. The Sweatfest one is pretty good. Now, I don't usually pick apart the little things in videos, but the instructor and exercisers' outfits are over-the-top in this one. And, the one exerciser, who is supposed to have the martial arts experience, is, well, kind of on the chubby side. Hello, muffin top. Apart from the distractions, I do think it's a decent workout.

Spreen's workout is decent, too. Her cueing is good - I like the moves - but I have to find an alternative solution for the combat drills section, which requires a body bar. The only body bar I have is 18 lbs., which is far too heavy. A broom felt too light. I'm thinking I'll use an unloaded barbell. Hate to have to buy ANOTHER piece of equipment just for one workout.

One other k'boxing workout I like is intermediate, but I add the weighted gloves to bring it up a tick: Kathy Smith's Cardio Kickboxing. It's an old one, but I still enjoy dusting it off from time to time, just for something different (and lighter) than Cathe. Same for 10 Min. Solutions K'box.

cathy,

i like kathy's kickboxing. i really like keli roberts in it, whom also does 10 min. solution's kickbox bootcamp. that is a good add-on dvd or to use for warm ups when doing your own routines.i have the cardio knockout dvd but haven't tried her aerobox workout yet. i find to that adding in weighted gloves can help with the intensity of the workout, that was such a good point to bring up.

i tried kickbox bootcamp from kimerbly spreen and that was a good one. i have cardio camp on netflix b/c a yahoo group of mine is raving about this workout. i think it suppose to be kind of like KM in that it does drills, high intensity, and standing leg kicks for technique and sculpting. cross my fingers its a goodie. i have a small barbell i just load with 5lbs when i did her bootcamp on. i hear and those body bars don't come cheap esp. with shipping(since they don't sell them in stores around here)

call me a sucker too,but besides the off count reps, i like tae-bo mostly the older stuff though, i can do without billy bands, amp sticks and all that.

Kassia,
I like Keli, too. Love the punching with dumbbells in 10 Minute Solutions. I agree, it's a good add-on. I'm hoping she'll release another k'box workout soon. Will have to check out the other Spreen workout. I haven't hard of Cardio Camp. Is that also Spreen? Let us know how it is when you try it.

yes its one of the 2600 CIA series i believe.

i wish keli would do another kickbox workout too. its def. her fortey. i saw the ASAP workout at ross but didn't realize that there were only 3-8min. segments. even for ross prices i didn't think it was worth it. and some reviews i have read said she does not keep even reps with those newer ones. shame b/c she is such a great instructor.

i must def. post more about workouts here. its been hard to keep up LOL. but i keep hearing all the good workouts and netflix is brining them in faster then i keep trying them. hopefully the library will consider carrying more CIA workouts but for now they only have the one. probably a donation though.

I hadn't thought of Cardio Camp being structured like Kick Max. Mainly because I never do the leg and butt section. But it's no where near the intensity of Kick Max. It's good in it's own right though. It's a weaving of hi/lo (mostly low impact) combos with kickboxing combos. There are three of each. Then Kimberly strings all the hi/lo sections together and adds a brief but higher impact section at the end, followed by all the kickboxing combos strung together. There is a section for butt and legs but it's a whole lotta unweighted lunges and squats (some roundhouse kicks).

Some nice premixes if you only want to do hi/lo or all kickboxing.

I will say, I wasn't a fan of Kick Max because it seems more of a "parts" workout. The cardio sections of Cardio Camp flow together better as one. And, I feel like I get a complete cardio workout on Cardio Camp even skipping the butt and leg section - I still get a 55 minute workout. That's actually a perfect fit for me. I just don't have time for hour+ workouts.
