Hardcore Fitness Maniacs Tuesday October 3

Since we are talking food....miraculously I have gotten up pretty early to exercise lately on and off. But in order to do it, I have to eat, usually WW toast w/PB and water. I eat it and immediately start my WO. Does this matter, having that food in my stomach? Meaning, if I didn't I would puke and pass out, but I have heard so many people say it is better to do it on an empty stomach, cardio anyway. I know weights, forget it, you need your energy. But even then, do you eat right before, or wait 1-2 hours?
We ate those tacos last night, and about 45min after I started my cardio WO. Not really a good example since I stuffed mmyself, but, basically, what do you guys do? Do you eat first, and if so, how long do you wait? Does it really hinder your cal/fat burn if you have food in your stomach?

Meg,

I am too cheap to spend money on the hrm, but have to have my shakes now!!! Wal Mart has some protein shakes that aren't as expensive. Cathe drinks the Isopel (I think that is how you spell it)...it is more of a fruit tasting drink (no mixing..as is in bottle)for people who are lactose intolerant. Anyhow, maybe dh will get me a hrm for my birthday if I can stop buying perfume. lol.

Anne,

What time do you usually eat dinner? You can't be eating too late at night or you are just sabotaging what you are trying to do with your hardcore body unless you are just taking in pure lean protein and nothing else.

Charlotte~~

Thanks for the welcome and the response ladies. I too struggle with the DH that can sabotage good eating. He likes mac'n'cheese at least once or twice per week. And of couse, he can eat whatever, and never gain!

My workout today is total body, either SS, PP, or MM. And after reading/talking with you all, I won't be afraid to lift heavier than usual! Then I will go for a run. Gotta be quick though, I have A LOT to do tonight. Study for a test (I'm in nursing school) and then class until late tonight!

Does anyone use protein shakes? If so, pre or post workout. I have the GNC brand of Designer Whey. I've used it in the past, but don't know if that's really a good one. Any thoughts?

Also any tips on eating clean and making it fit into a very hectic schedule (ie have to pack food that doesn't need heating/fridge for five meals per week) would be greatly appreciated. That is my constant stuggle, food that fits on the run. I never do fast food; I usually pack a PB&J on light whole wheat with low sugar jelly. Totals a/b 175 calories, good fats, but, it's not real high in protein. So, I don't know if it's "good" or not. The more I think a/b food (what to eat/avoid) the more confused I get. Help!

Off to workout!

Megadoo - what works for me at 3:00 am (cuz I always wake up starving) is a small low-fat, sugar free yogurt. It's enough to coat the stomach (from the acids that settle in your system overnite) and it has a good ratio of carbs and protein without being too heavy. This works well for me and I can get thru Imax and P90X (usually). I also take amino acids for protein and muscle recovery.

Food suggestions:

Dannon's Light & Fit Yogurt mix with a handful of nuts
Atkins Advantage Protein bars
Canned or packaged tuna fish (alittle higher in sodium though)
Grill your meats days before and store in refrig and make sandwich out of it if your short on time
cubed cheese in bags from grocery store
salad
cottage cheese
protein shake (pre make in a shaker w/ff milk)

As for protein shakes, I use GNC Probolic SR, but I think the kind you get is good too.

OMG!!! You have come along way, but your still as pretty. That was just 2 years ago??? You know, your gonna have to take down your fat chicks thingy cuz your no fat chick anyways, YOUR A HOT MAMA!!!!

Charlotte~~

Wow! Lots of posts today. :) I don't think I could catch up on personals. LOL!

Anywhos, Welcome Goldenrun! :)

My elbow is so much better today. So happy it's just a bruise. Talking on the cell phone is as dangerous in the house as it is driving. LOL!

As for food. So far today I've had my Oatmeal soaked in soymilk/protein powder and frozen rasperries. I like my oatmeal cold and uncooked. Lunch was a big salad with tons of vegies, red wine vinegar for dressing and some turkey slices. I'll workout and then have a protein shake and I'll probably have some brown rice. salad and chicken for dinner. I'll also have a snack or 2, maybe an apple and some turkey jerky or some cottage cheese/yogurt and baby carrots(bought the cutest baby carrot packages as costco)and my addiction to diet coke with remain unscathed. There is definitely some tweaking I could do with what and when I eat, but for now I am doing what I can do consistantly and without obsessing. One step at a time.

Meaghan - Hats off to you, girl!!! What an amazing transformation you have done to yourself. Holy moly!!! CONGRATULATIONS YOU MANIAC!!!

Goldenrun - I always have my protein shakes after my workouts. I eat Pro Pudding before my workout.

Thanks for the advice. Keep it coming if you have more words of wisdom. I went heavier on the legs than usual. I ended up doing MM, but couldn't fit my run it, too little time today!

I love the thought about not obsessing, but doing what you can do consistently! Sounds like perfect advice fore me right now!

Just finished Back and Biceps X. This workout just kills me. Everything I upped in weight, I had to lower in weight the next exercise. So, I call it even. LOL! It didn't beat me and I didn't beat it.

Goldenrun, Some other good snacks are Edemame(soy beans)or snap peas with string cheese. The shake I'm drinking right now is non fat milk, protein powder, frozen banana, frozen raspberries, all blended. Very Good!

Goldenrun -

Welcome. I didn't answer your post about lifting heavy weights because I work out around an injury (cervical disc) and am somewhat limited. I have been able to recently match and even start surpassing some of Cathe's weights (depending on the rep count). I'm not the best with my diet, as I don't eat meat and I'm a very picky eater. These ladie's here are REALLY disciplined.

Megadoo - Wow - you look great. That's quite an accomplishment.

Diana Sue - I'm having 2nd thoughts about a weight workout tomorrow. I guess I'm a little more sore than I initially thought. It's not extreme though. I'll probably end up doing the new Tracey Staehle cuz I read over at VF that it's Functional Fitness like.

Speaking of VF. I just read a post over there about sciatica and exercise. Several people posted that their PT or Chiro told them that they're sciatica was being caused from Piriformis Syndrome and cycling makes it worse. I guess I was correct in my assumptions that my piriformis is tugging at my sciatic nerve and certain exercises make the piriformis spasm more causing more sciatica. I slept with a pillow between my legs last night and I feel a little better today. I've been rubbing the spasms out of my piriformis also.

THE AIRPORT JUST CALLED - they have my CD's. I gave them my CC# and they are going to Fed Ex them to me. This is the best birthday present ever!! My Buckcherry's, Nickelback and Chili Peppers are coming home! See.......I knew there were still good people left in the world.

I just thought I would pop in and check. You all have been busy! I usually use Designer whey protein in my smoothies. Last time though I decided to try Six Star from Walmart last time. Not as good tasting. I do not eat anything before I workout. When I am finished I make a protein shake before I shower. Later I come back and make lunch. When I did P90X I did the egg white omelets and did eat 1/2 of a whole wheat or sprouted grain english muffin with the soy sausage. Then I wasn't so hungry at lunch time though.

Maeghan, wow. You should be really proud of your accomplishment. I agree. You are not a fat chick.

Anne, I do eat whole wheat past and rice once in awhile. If I am going to eat starchy carbs though I try to do it early in the day. Most of the time though I don't eat them at all.

Lora, are you talking about Tracey Staehle's core workout? That one sounds good. Or the Body Sculpt Kickboxing one?

Diana Sue - I was thinking about the Total Body One on the Kickbox DVD. I just previewed it again to see what equipment I needed. The 50 minute Ab/Back one will have to wait until a "dread" day workout, as I can't even begin to think about working my abs for that long!! I may do it it parts at first and work up to it. Early reviews on VF are very positive for this new instructor. Everyone seems to agree that these are good projects for one of her first offerings. The ab one is getting rave reviews for the music, etc. I'll have to check it out tomorrow night. I hear everyone saying they think she's tough enough to. I thought she would be. She's a Cathe fan.

off to watch GH
