Hardcore Fitness Maniacs for Wed 8-22

Sorry for highjacking this thread...

Hello Hardcore Ladies!

Recently, a friend said to me that when she starts to daydream while lifting, she knows it's time to up the weights. I realized all I do when I lift is daydream so on Sunday (my typical upper body day), I decided to lift heavier. I was able to up my weights quite a bit (25s instead of 15s on SOME exercises). My question is this - should I continue to do my current workouts with heavier weights (Cathe's strength training DVDs) and expect to see strength gains - or should I mix up the actual moves as well? (I've never 'lifted' on my own - I've always followed videos).

I'm very interested in gaining strength (if size is a byproduct of that, so be it, but I'm really interested in strength).

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! :)

My goodness you are all so chatty today!

This morning I rode 20 miles. One hour, 13 minutes. It was windy. I know you're surprised to hear this. That stupid new inhaler I did EIGHT times yesterday (it was a sample and lower dosage than prescribed) gave me a headache! I woke up with it about 2am. But not a migraine at least. WHY oh WHY do they keep giving me ones to try with headaches as a side effect. Or maybe the more important question is why do I keep trying them? :p

Diane Sue - I'm sorry about your migraine. Is it gone? I hate having to take Imitrex. I hate the feeling.

Lora - What are the x-ray results?

Char - Whatcha gonna do about the job? Congrats either way on being thought of.

Lisa ZT27 - Nice to see you over here! Where did you read that? I'd love to read more. That's definitely something I'm willing to try. It sure wouldn't give me a headache!!! :)

Gotta run! Still haven't turned in my 6 month goals and I think I'm overdue. The date kept changing. Better finish them today!

I just couldn't bring myself to do my workout...TOOK A NAP INSTEAD!
I just couldn't find the energy...well I guess today was my rest day and Sunday I'll be working out!

Hey Suz,
Here's a VERY small article I'm going to type out word for word for all of you.... :)

For those with exercise-induced asthma, treatment could be an orange. "Exercise causes drying and cooling of the airways," says Sandy Tecklenburg, doctoral canditate at Indiana U. And for some, this leads to asthma symptoms, such as coughing, breathlessness, increased mucus, and wheezing. Tecklenburg found that vit. C could reduce these. "Vitamin C has an anti-inflammatory response in its own rights," says Tecklenburg, lead author of the study. "Vitamin C may improve asthma control beyond that provided by medication, so that even if subjects do not change the dose or amount of medication they are taking, they may experience less symptoms." This vitamin may allow asthmatics to back down on medication or reduce dosage of medication. The study subject took 1500mg of absorbic acid for two weeks and showed improved lung function after exercise.

I got this article from the new issue of Oxygen. I also read this information in my NSCA-CPT journal I get bi-monthly. I hope this helps. Let me know if it works or not.

Hope everyone has a great evening. Pump hard!

Lisa - Now that you mention it...I do remember reading about vitamin C and asthma. What issue of Oxygen is that? Maybe that's where I read it. I even wrote it down b/c it said to take a certain amount of vitamin C before exercise. But now I can't remember where I put that note! What is it again that you take for memory loss? :) THANKS for typing that all out!!! I'll give it a go and let you know.

Lisa - Thanks for the info on asthma and oranges. I can't eat oranges (or any citrus) because of my reflux disease, but I do take extra Vitamin C with my multivitamin.

Suz - Sometimes I get side effects from a medication for the first couple weeks and then they dissipate. Maybe you can give it a chance?? I don't know what to say. Migraines and headaches in general are the worst. I've had a whopping one all day, but I think it's from my spasmed traps and not a migraine......still....it hurts and throbs and pounds.

The x-ray results weren't what I was hoping for. The bone is healing with a callus on it. He said it's probably from me being more mobile on my foot than I should be! He said it will heal slower and that I MUST be careful. He explained how fragile and serious stress fractures are and went on to tell me that should I fracture it further, I could possibly need surgery with bone grafted from my hip bone. I went over various exercise options with him and he didn't really feel any of them were safe enough. The least harmful would be the bike with my boot on and hardly any standing hills. I go back in 3 weeks for another x-ray. I guess I've got to look into buying another Spinning DVD!!!

Lora - I tried staying on the inhalers in the past and the headaches just get worse. Since they are steroids and the side effects are headaches I think I'm doomed. The Spiriva is not a steroid and therefore doesn't have headaches as a side effect. The non-steroidal inhalers are less-effective and maybe that's why my insurance is reluctant to pay. I'm hoping my neurologist will write a letter. The FNP wrote one and I got the "rejection" letter today.

You better listen to your doctor about that foot! Sounds serious if you don't!
