Hard Strikes Heavy Bag bonus

I don't have a heavy bag and I have no plans to get one. However, I really love Hard Strikes, but it does bother me that it is so short (for my liking). I do the full workout + core, but I'd rather have longer cardio. I got 2 pound gloves for Christmas and I think they really up the intensity of kickboxing workouts. They make the first 30 minutes of Hard Strikes pretty intense.

My question is for those of you who have done the heavy bag bonus. Even though I don't have a heavy bag, would doing the bonus with the weighted gloves still give a good cardio burn or is it pointless w/out the heavy bag?

I'm glad you asked this because I was wondering the same thing. I did see one poster used a filled military duffel bag but I don't have one of those either.

Absolutely, I have a heavy bag but will do certain moves with out the bag, ex. upper cuts on the bag just don't feel right to me. If you are punching hard with good technique you will definitely get a great w/o without the bag.

I agree. You could do all the moves with weighted gloves and get a great workout.

Although I haven't done this workout yet, I recall a bonus bag workout in one of the STS Cardio MMA workouts that I've done without a bag. I figure as long as I'm moving, kicking and punching, then I'm burning calories.

Hard Strikes is on the slate for tomorrow and I'll probably add the bonus bag on.

Sweat Fest!

Update...I did Hard Strikes (no conditioning) & Heavy Bag today. Even though I don't have a bag, the sweat was rolling off me.

Awesome, low impact workout!

I have a bag, but I read that someone who doesn't have a bag used their stability ball. That accually sounds good because my husbands bag is harder that what Cathe uses. His is the kind that hangs from the ceiling. I think next time I might try the ball. But no matter what, the bonus bag is a great add on, esp. with the 16oz gloves I have.

I just wanted to add I've done the heavy bag bonus twice on my TKO hanging bag and oh my, the sweat just drips off me! I absolutely LOVE it!

Two thumbs up for sure!

:)

I had so much fun doing HS & the Heavy Bag Bonus! I don't have a bag YET...I've actually hung a tubing :p from the rafters in my basement and just used them for something to aim at and it worked great. I'm sure having the bag is a MUCH better option but till I get one, this has worked great for me! LOVE both the workouts!!!

I don't have a heavy bag either and won't be getting one, so I was also curious about doing the heavy bag tabatas without the bag. I wear a HRM and did burn a pretty good number of calories adding all of the tabatas on. Without them, I did not burn sufficient calories to make me feel like I had really used my time wisely that day. I try to burn at least 400 calories for a workout. I cannot remember the exact numbers, but I remember that I burned enough to make it worth my while. I definitely was punching hard and putting a lot of effort in, and I have weighted gloves (1 lb) and I got my heart rate up to my training zone.

I finally did it this morning--premix 12 with no heavy bag. I wore Cathe's 2 pound weighted gloves. I loved it! Were they "real" tabatas (like in tabatacise)? No. They probably are with the heavy bag, but with weighted gloves it was more... intense shadow-boxing. But it was still a great addition. That will be my new go-to Hard Strikes workout--premix 12. The tabatas made it a great, intense, hour long workout.

Monday I did Chapter 1/Cardio using 3# weights and then did the Heavy Bag Tabatas without the bag using 1# weights.
YES - it is a great workout even without the bag, and is a very nice add on to the cadio... about 40 minutes.
Today I have big time DOMS in my shoulders and serratus anterior; love it!

Update

Those (non)heavy bag tabatas were even more intense than I initially thought yesterday. My back (the whole latissimus dorsi area) is so sore this morning! I know it's from not the main Hard Strikes w/ conditioning because I've done that several times with the 2 pound weighted glove and did not suffer DOMS. So it is definitely from the weighted-glove tabatas!

Exactly! and yes, the DOMS creeped into my lats and ALL the way down:)

I did that one yesterday with 1 pound gloves. My only comment about the premix is I wish the tabatas were before the wt work and those wonderful sit up / push up combos.
This morning I feel my core the most. I made sure to engage my core for every strike.
I love this premix. The music is my favorite. Last week I was working out with it wen my hubby came home. He said "leave it out for me. I'll to the boxing part after my run". He worked up more of a sweat from HS than his run. Oh and just redid the workout day before yesterday.

Hard Strikes is fun but it is in no way low impact. It's got like 200 freakin' jumping jacks plus those damn scissors!! The thing kills my knees. That's the only thing I don't like about it.

Hmm I think I'll use my discs for the jacks and scissors or just do one-sided jacks to reduce the impact when I try this one...
