Hammer lunges in HSC - need help!

Hi all,

Does anyone have any tips and/or modifications for doing the hammer lunges in High Step Challenge? I found that they really torque my knee. I workout on carpet - only surface available, unfortunately.

Also, I totally cannot do the plank move where you have your toes on the step and move on and off. Should I just substitute a regular plank?

Thanks for any help offered!

Hi Stephanie,

Why don't you modify the movement by just doing regular lunges. If you want, you can either do the lunges with hand weights or a barbell. I believe decline pushups preceed the plank move where you have your toes on the step and move on and off. It was difficult in the past for me to do this movement, so I would either do all decline pushups or I would just push the step out of the way and do a regular plank. Planks are wonderful for the core (I have seen dramatic changes in my middle area when I incorporate them into my workouts) so I'm sure if you do the standard ones they will work fine for you. I have found that the more I do plank work, the stronger I get.

Good Luck!

I do not like the hammer lunge either. I agree you could sub regular lunges or do power scissors if you really want to go crazy }( }( . I also agree to do just regular plank work. It is soooooooooo good for you:+ :+

Thanks for the suggestions. I did regular static lunges today, but was wondering if there was something else to up the intensity a bit. I'll play around with some different type of lunges.

I dread planks - but I'll do them, in hopes that I can someday do the on/off step move!

Thanks again,

I used to not like those hammer lunges, then, I tried taking some tips from Core Secrets, where there is a similar move, but without the hammer punch (just a reach towards the floor). Concentrate on placing the foot and on keeping the knee behind the toes rather than on the punch. You can later add a reach toward the floor or the punch.

Also, you don't have to put torque in this move. Rather than starting in a 'ready' stance and turning toward the front a bit, as when you do punches, just stay facing forward.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks Kathryn!
