Haircolor question

Hi all.

I hope someone will help me out here.
When you go to buy a permanent haircolor and your hair has been previously colored, which shade do you pick? I mean looking on the back it says, "if your natural color is...choose this shade". But I've colored my hair lighter than my natural color, so my roots are darker with the rest of my hair getting lighter going toward the bottom. Is the new color I buy going to start with my current lighter color or my natural color? I'm assuming my current color because how would the new color know it's not my natural????

I'm so confused! Help if you can.

And, as always, THANK YOU!

Ok,before you have a disaster.
You will not always get what is on the box.
1st rule color does not lift color. I you have old color on hair that has not grown out. If you want to go any color from your ends down you will be fine. If you wish to go lighter it requires bleaching up the old color(i DON'T RECCOMEND YOURSELF)
Color depends on your natural (root) amd underlying pigment.
Browns have more reds in them.
You can usually go 2-3 shades lighter than natural with finer less resistant hair. Any more and you will end up with the golden colors.
Color is more complicated than you guys think.I say if you want your natural back use Natural instincts(safer) 2 shades lighter than you desire.Semi permanent comes out darker than shown.
Stay away from Loreal Ferria, especially if you plan on getting highlights or perming(it will get hot and steam on hair when these are applied. Thus fry job.Clairol is your safest at home.
Good luck, any more questions let me know,
Anne

Gosh, I personally have horrible results with Clairol products. I have used Loreal feria and excellence cream and I really like them.

My hair is medium brown and I use an ash blonde color. The results have been pretty good, the red has been toned down but still looks relatively natural. Feria though is more drying to the hair I think.

Clairol ash products turn my hair greenish. The color looks so unnatural. Who knows, maybe just the colors I chose.

I really recommend the Loreal $20. kit with base color and highlights. It lifts natural color pretty well, the highlights are a perfect contrast to the base color, and the hair is in very good condition afterward. The higher price is well worth it.

Yeah, but don't be using feria if you ever plan on getting a perm.

Little story,
a girl came in that had died her hair black with feria, wanted some highlights due to being too dark.( I used a cap due to having to tone it and unsure what was on her head.)
I pulled her through, appied a mild bleach. She sat to watch tv for 10 minutes and her head was steaming. (it usually takes around 45 min to remove black color)I mean steaming. I almost threw her into the sink . Her hair was disintegrating. Well i toned her with a brown color . She was not going light. The hair was mush .
She has now quit coloring her own hair and let it grow out.
Clairol colors have stronger bases than loreal. You probably needed to mix an ash with a natural .
I learned color on clairol.Had a great teacher from the company. Their tube color is much better. Sally"s Carries it .I don't use it in the salon. I use Aloxi. It has been around for years, but has the knowledge behind it.
Good luck.

i agree that the color on the box isn't the color you will get. I am a natural brownette (light brown) and am a fake medium blonde. Any time I have tried to dye my own hair, it has faded to red and looked awful on me. I have been having my hair weaved by a professional for year now and it is worth the price.
