Hello,

I will be starting classes next month, learning how to prepared taxes. I was just wandering if you guys have taken this class before? And, wondering, is there a software program that I can buy so that I am a head of the class :p ;) ;)

I am also interested in corporation tax prepare, thank you!

I took the class long ago, and it's excellent. I would not buy a program yet - you won't need to.

Thank Honeybunch :)

I just need to score over 80% in order to work for H&R Block. If I score under well this means that I'll be seeking other employment x( x( So you really don't think I need the sofeware, huh? I just want to be ahead of the game :p :9 ;)

Pay attention in class & do your homework and you'll be ahead of the game!

I also took the class and worked for H&R. For me it was almost like a hobby because I sure made a lot more money in my day job. I worked a couple of evenings a week.

Yes...do all of the homework and you'll be fine. When you actually get to work, it's all done on a computer program and it becomes much simpler. The class is all done by hand to give to a good working knowledge of taxes. After that, it's a breeze. The class does require a lot of work though. I actually enjoyed the class more than I enjoyed working for them. I haven't decided if I'm going back to work for them this year. I've worked for them for two years now. Again, the money is not there.

I also did taxes (on the side) at home with Turbo Tax.

Good luck!!!

Nancy

Thanks guys :) :( ;-) ;)

Nancy - What do you mean when you say the money is not there? I haven't checked into the H&R pay. Even tho, I need it  and hoping I make $$$$$. Too, I just wanted to do start my own business mainly for IRS purpose. I don't own a home and Mr. Tax man gets me every year ;(

I think that some people may make money at H & R if they stay long enough. Your commission percentage goes up over time, I believe. Like I said, I we never really in it for the money. You earn an hourly rate but it's always against your commission so at the end you get a "bonus" (if you've done enough over your hours). I hope this makes sense as I'm not sure I'm articulating this late at night.

I mainly did it to keep my brain cells moving in the right direction and I was able to do my own taxes and that of my immediate family. I also did some "side" work which is against H & R's rules so if you decide to do this you have to keep it quiet. H & R would like you to drum up business for them, not for yourself. Everyone I work with does taxes in their own time though but keep it very quiet. H & R is great for learning though and when you have questions, everyone is there is help you so I have taken many questions to them.

I still haven't decided if I'll go back this year or not. You may do better financially than I did because this past year (my second year with them) I only worked two evenings a week. The first year I worked three evenings a week. It is a great time of year (winter) to do this type of extra work as it beats sitting in front of the television for me. I would never consider it in the summer. I'm a school nurse during the day and have the summer off so I wouldn't consider it other then the fact that it's winter only.

Again, it's a great learning experience as they teach you really well.

Hope this helps. Nancy

Another thing to add: they have continuing education and you can keep going with them even to the point of being an enrolled agent. You sort of got my wheels turning to the point that I may check into it myself. There's a lot of areas in which you can specialize, like clergy and church taxes - a real goodmine. If I were to get back into it (I was married to a minister for awhile) I would try to concentrate on that area.
