Gym Style Question

In Gym Style - (Back, Shoulders, Biceps) you start into the bicep workout with slow 4 count bicep curls with a barbell. My question is, if I choose to use dumbells for this part, do I lose any benefits that I'd normally get with a bar?

The reason I ask this is, I hate using the bar for this! It makes my wrists hurt and for some reason I can't lift as heavy. I think 20 is my max with the bar, but I did the same exercise with two 15 lb dumbells without the pain and discomfort I get from the bar, even though it was still a challenge.
