Gym Style Push Ups - what's your strategy?

Try a more challenging version of push ups for a few workouts - like one handed push ups or with your hands real close together - then regular push ups will seem easier.

Try increasing the reps even if you have to do them on your knees.
 
Another vote for all on the knees. On my toes hurts my wrists and shoulder joints. And I am happy with my musculature in my chest, so see no need to start dreading this part of the workout. But I salute those of you that can do big girl pushups!
 
I agree - the way to increase what you can do is to do them, and keep doing them. IMO, the best way is to do as many as you can for your first set, and do more sets until you've done whatever # you've planned to do for the day.

Just had to jump in & say that I did ALL 72 pushups on my toes today!!! I've been doing the do as many as I can, and then drop to my knees thing. But after seeing some of you say that you took a longer break, I tried that today. I didn't rest too long, just a little longer than Cathe & I was able to do ALL of them, even those last 2 four count sets!! YEAH for Gym Style Chest/ Triceps! ;-)

I bet you will be able to do them all, with the same breaks as Cathe. I'm speaking from experience here. :) Pre-X, I could make it to the set of 8's before going to my knees. Post-X, I can do them all, even the slow count ones at the end.

No more girlie push-ups for me!!!!!

I can do them all on my toes, with one longer break between the 10 & 8 count sets. My strategy was to do as many as I could on my toes, then drop to my knees; take longer breaks as needed. BUT I also started tacking them on to the end of other workouts throughout the week, as well. So, that's my suggestion: do them consistently.

What about IMAX 3? I can only do all 10 step intervals/blasts by hitting pause about 2 or 3 times throughout the tape. Does anyone else rest way more than Cathe during this cardio tape?
 
I do the first set on my toes, then the second on my knees, and I just keep alternating the entire set. I have done them all on my toes, but my wrists don't like it that much.
 
I also need to stop a couple of times throughout the tape. Intervals 1 (the straddle taps), 4 and 7 really kill me. I usually stop for a little more rest after those.
