Gym Style Chest Exercises

In GS Chest & Triceps, does anyone do chest flys before the chest presses? I generally do the workout as is, but another thread I read suggested doing isolation exercises first. So, I'm considering trying the flys first...

Any suggestions/opinions?

Thanks,
Melissa

the only reason to do this would be to pre-exhaust the chest muscles. chest press is a compound movement (2 joints) and chest flys is a single joint isolation movement. you can try it if you want but you probably won't be able to lift as heavy for the chest press if you lift heavy for the flys. its a nice change if you body has gotten used to doing press and then flys every time.

Flyes before presses makes much more sense to me : if you choose a weight that makes the last 2 reps in the flyes difficult, you can still get more out of the muscle with the compound move because other muscles can help the tuckered-out one.

Try it! It's always good to mix things up and do things a bit differently to avoid having your body get too used to the same moves in the same sequence.

Thanks for the advice! In a few days when it's time to do GS C&T again, I'm going to do the flys (flyes?) before the presses.

So, do you modify the Gym Styles in any other ways?

I was thinking of doing a 3-day split with the Gym Styles: Chest and Triceps on day one, Back and Biceps premix day three, then do the shoulder workout day five. Do you think it would be too much on the shoulders to do a shorter kickboxing workout (KPC or Kickmax premix) beforehand as a long warm-up?

Thanks again,
Melissa

I put longer breaks between some sets (as I do with many Cathe workouts) and even longer breaks between body parts. I also use the bicep work in a 'pick-and-choose' fashion, and don't do all the exercises each workout. I haven't done GS for a while, so I can't recall any other modifications.

I think it would be okay, but YMMV. You'll have to try it and see how it works. However, if you usually use weighted gloves for kickboxing, I'd recommend not doing so when using the KB as a warm-up for upper body weight work.

Flys come before presses in PUB. I am not sure if it matters, but I do this one a lot and just remembered that.
