GS C&T pushups

Did GS C&T yesterday. Was only able to do the first two sets of pushups on my knees.

How long did it take for you to do all 72 pushups?

The first time I did the workout I did all 72 pushups but had to go onto my knees for the 10s, 8s, etc.
The first time I was able to do all of the pushups with straight legs was either the seventh or eighth time. One difference was I had my rest day the day before.
I found I had to build up my endurance more in terms of my right wrist than my chest muscles. My right wrist would start aching badly which would make me go to my knees. On my knees my wrist wouldn't hurt. I started experimenting with slightly different hand positions and that made a world of difference.

Ironically I remember as a teenager that doing one pushup with straight legs used to kill me. I'm now 39 and can do more pushups than I could in my 20s...pretty cool!

I used to coach synchronized swimming and part of the warm up was push ups. Upper body strength is essential for this sport. The kids had a choice 10 pushups with straight legs or 20 pushups on their knees. By the end of three months all of the girls were doing at least 20 pushups with straight legs and complaining loudly that I was mean. Ironically when fitness testing occured at their school, one of my swimmers was so proud that she did more pushups with straight legs than any of the girls or boys in her class. She thanked me....definitely one of the highlights from being a volunteer coach.

Keep at it, you'll get there! My first time through I could do 14/12/10 on my toes, and the remainder on my knees. I put this on the back burner for a while while I did an X rotation, and did it again this morning for the first time in 3 months - today I did the entire session on my toes.

I'd recommend trying to increase each time you do the workout, even if it's only by a single push-up. Eventually, you'll get through all 72 on your knees, then slowly, you'll get to all on your toes! You just have to really push yourself, and pay attention to proper form.

Try pausing the DVD player between sets and concentrate on getting through all 72 first - either straight leg or on the knees - and then work on decreasing the amount of rest time between sets until you can keep up with the workout. That's what I did and now I can do all 72. :)

I knocked them all out the first time I did it. But, I regularly do full military style pushups. I usually do 50/day, so GS was just adding a few more onto my normal set.

The key to pushups is consistency. The more you do them, the easier they will get. These days, if I take 2-3 days off from doing them, I find that they are harder to get through my normal sets.
You do have to take a rest day or two here and there, but if you can do them every other day at least, you will notice your strength and endurance will increase pretty quickly.

I consider these to be the ultimate endurance challenge for the chest muscles so I do them instead of the pyramid chest work when I do PUB.

When I do GS C&T I just do two sets of twelve so I can really concentrate on the weight work. I really want to concentrate on the strength aspect of this workout rather than how many reps I can do.
