Good Eats Power Bars

Hell, Everyone!

I am a freak for the FoodNetwork Show Good Eats with Alton Brown.

I recently tried a couple of his recipes for healthy snack bars. I made the protein bars and the rice krispie treats. I haven't tried the granola yet.

Just a note - if you make the rice treats, make sure you use the hugest bowl you have because when I started adding the rice to the marshmallowsm I reallized too late - uh oh, this is not all going to fit! Puffs were everywhere!

And for WW counters, I figured the following points:

Protein bar - 3 pts each

Rice treats - 1 pt each

Granola squares - 4 pts each

Here's a link to the recipes:

Have fun! If I could do it - you can too!

P.S. The protein bars are ESPECIALLY yummy when frosted with a thin layer of Nutella!

Another Alton Brown fan here! His explanations are so interesting and fun. I saw the energy bar episode too and I can't wait to try some of the recipes this weekend (veganized versions of course :9 ) Yummy!

Hi Amy

How are you going to veganize power bars with marshmallow? I would LOVE to know what to substitute so that I can make rice krispie squares.

Thanks
Corrie

>You can buy vegan marshmallows. I think they have them at
>Vegan Essentials.

Yes, www.veganessentials.com has them (great folks, very good shipping costs, especially if you buy large amounts, FAST shipping). They also have a 'marshmallow cream.'

www.veganstore.com also has them (and often has a sale on 'irregular' marshmallows--that is, they taste the same as the others, but they didn't turn out the right shape or as pretty: if you're using them for 'Rice Krispie treats, you'll melt them anyway, so it wouldn't matter).

I haven't seen vegan mini-marshmallows anywhere.

I think the power bars are already vegetarian. At least all the ingredients I got that were packaged said "vegetarian" on the label.

No, I haven't seen the Eating on Asphalt series yet, but I'll keep looking for it!

P.S. I think it's going to be chocolate waffles for dinner tonight!

I was home with DD14 watching the show where he made them (DD14 is a huge Alton fan - she likes that he tells the whys and not just the hows) and she turned to me and asked, "So when are WE going to make these?" I think I'll get the ingredients for the bars this weekend. They look like they would taste good. They are definitely healthy, and much much better than the protein bars the grocery store sells!

You're right Susan. Except for the recipe containing marshmallows I think all of the other bar recipes were vegetarian. I don't think any of them were vegan though. But they CAN be, and that is my mission this weekend! :p

Hi Susan,
I also LOVE Alton Brown and his shows. I saw the protein bar episode and am looking forward to trying them out. Which kind was your favorite bar?

Love Alton Brown. I'm glad I ran across this post so I have the link to his recipes. I saw this episode and forgot all about it. Can't wait to try them out!

Hi there:

Just wanted to chime in and tell all of you Alton Brown fans that I met him at a Culinary Conference about 6 years ago.

He was very nice and down to earth... I was impressed!!

Take care, Lynn M.

I've only made the rice krispy bars and the power bars.

I'm a klutz in the kitchen - I'm working on getting my "oven legs" I guess you could say - haha! I can be pretty good about baking, although I'm a little disorganized.

I did prefer the power bars because like I said previously, I melted the marshmallows easily and then got all discombobulated when I started adding the rice cereal to the bowl and reallized - Oh crap - this isn't all going to fit!

Things got very messy very quickly and puffs were flying everywhere. It probably looked very funny if you had been watching me.

Also, I didn't have the right size pan to push the krispies treats into (because the power bars were already in it), so I just smushed them flat onto a cutting board and probably didn't get them at "tight" as they should've been.

Like I said - a klutz! But both treats got raves from the DH.

BTW, I ordered a larger (13 qt) bowl online on Thursday.

Susan L.G.

Edited because apparently I can't spell either :p...
