Goldendoodle

We bought a Goldendoodle two years ago. He is great with our kids including our 11 month old. He is smart and learns quickly (expect that he is not supposed to go in the trash--he doesn't follow this rule very well...) He is pretty even-tempered, not overly hyper or anything. His father is a standard poodle and his mother is a goldendoodle. Our dog does not shed at all-- it is like a miracle. We bought him from a breeder in New Jersey--I think they go by "Jersey Doodles". They seemed pretty professionial but I have nothing to compare it too because this is the first dog I ever got through a breeder.

From my experience as a veterinarian, I'll tell you I'm seeing less and less coming through as puppies. They seemed to be big a couple of years ago, but I find interest is waning in this mix breed. And, yes, although I've seen some nice ones, the majority have been hyper and, quite honestly, not very smart. About half of the ones I've seen do shed (I always ask the owners out of curiosity).

Also, a veterinary surgeon friend of mine at Ohio State University says they've seen a high number of these needing total hip replacements due to hip issues. Just FYI.

I vote for a non-shedding pound dog/rescue (poodle, bichon, schnauzer, maltese, yorkie, etc.) or a pure bred from a reputable breeder.

I do find it sad the number of dogs that are euthanized in shelters everyday and we have "breeders" out there pumping out these "designer" breeds. I've seen scorkies, biscottis, too! It's madness, I tell you!

ITA with christine. the only true "hypoallergenic" dogs are the ones that have HAIR and not FUR. poodles have hair (which is why if you don't groom them, it will grow and grow). the OP should really research those (and they can all be found at the pound or through breed specific rescue groups. not all pound dogs are rejects. some get turned in because of time or financial issues...nothing to do woth the dog itself). realize that ALL dogs create dander (which is what causes allergies) but certain breeds have very little. some of the breeds that fit this category are:
Poodles
Schnauzers
Portuguese Water Dog
Bichon Frise
Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
West Highland White Terrier

*please* consider doing some research and looking for a rescue. these poor dogs were purchased then turned into shelters or pounds. thousands of pure breeds are killed along with the strays. in a lot of cases, you can even get a puppy that was rescued from a puppy mill.

Every 9 seconds a HEALTHY dog or cat is killed simply because it is homeless.

ETA: despite what breeders will tell you, the "doodle" mixes DO shed and DO produce dander. you are mixing a highly shedding dog with fur with a non-shedding dog with hair. it's a mix and won't all be hair. my linus (a mutt) has hair and works as a therapy dog in the schools (this is one of the reasons he is ablt to be in the schools). i had a student that was so allergic he could not even be in friends' cars if their dog had been in there at any point. he was not allergic to linus and coud even put his face in linus' fur without any issues. linus has hair, not fur, and he does not shed. even when i use the furminator (a GREAT tool!!!) on him, hardly anything comes off.

RE: Lorie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

honestly, it is amazing!!! i have tried a lot of things but this one really works. i have two lab/chow/golden mixes and an aussie mix and you can imagine the undercoat and all the hair!!!
