Going to the dorms, no room to workout :( Help

Hi Everyone,

I just got accepted into the college of my dreams, and have found out my dorm room is going to be too small to workout in. Unless I workout on my bed. The room is 9 x 11, has two beds, two desks, two closets, two cabinet/dressers, and a sink.

The gym on the other hand, is open from 6 am to 10 pm, but it's a three mile walk to get there. I really would love to do Cathe but the fact that I won't be taking my step, my dumb bells, leaves me with no workouts. I don't have may of Cathe's yet. I do have stretch bands, and those I could take as they don't take up much room, but I'm kind of disappointed the gym is that far way, and even if I do walk there, I wouldn't have Cathe with me to actually do the routeine, so I'd be at a loss as to if I was doing things right or how many, as I just mirror Cathe, and do what she does. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kelly

Hmmm...that is a toughie. Is there a multipurpose room in the dorm building you could use? I remember when I was in college one of the dorms had this sort of room w/ a TV in it. Or, can you move some stuff around in the room just to eek out a tiny bit of space? Even if you have to use more sidways room?

Hey Kelly,

Would it be possible for you to get a portable DVD player? They've come down in price, but I know that going off to college is really expensive, so getting one might be hard. You could do Cathe's workouts wherever you wanted, even outside. Or in a general room, or whatever its called anymore. Or even at the gym if they had a room you could rent, borrow. Some college gyms do this as they know not all students want to take an aerobics class with everyone else, so they have a special room that you bring your own stuff and workout in. Or you could find a shelf and play the dvd, while using the weight room. Though I know all about dorm rooms. The one I got, my room mate and I, had to make bunk beds out of the two beds, as she couldn't get from one side of the room to the other without crawling over the bed. There was only 12 inches of space from the foot of my bed to the foot of her bed, as they were facing each other, since we couldn't turn them sideways. The room wasn't wide enough. So bunk beds might be an option for you, just to do some floor work in the room at least, not sure about cardio. But then again you can get the cardio in, on yur three mile walk/jog to the gym, so all you'd have left would be to tone a body part or two, once you got there, and then you could have some cardio after during your 3 mile walk home.

Another thing to do, is check to see if your college offers some fitness classes, if they do, you may be at the gym already, so after class you finish or add to your workout, and it won't seem so bad, as trying to fit it in after class and having to walk all that way back and forth.

Kelly,
If you have a laptop with a DVD player on it then you could take Cathe to another larger room. If the gym is too far away you might try one the of the upstairs study/meeting rooms in the library. You can usually borrow the keys for a few hours and they are fairly soundproof.
Good luck!

Kelley is it possible to bring abike to school ride to the gym for your aerobics or run to the gym foryour aerobics then do your weights or rollerblade or walk which would take about 45 at a pretty doable pace if you are worried about what to do as far as weights either write down the sequences in catehs dvds or while you are still home record the sound on to a tap that you could play in awalk man the old fashion kind not sure what the weatehr is like where you live if being outside for the walking or biking just afew ideas

Good ideas.
Also, if you walk or bike as much as you can (to classes, etc.), you'll get in a lot of "daily life" activity, and may be able to decrease your workouts without suffering.

A laptop with a DVD player could work instead of a DVD player, and a couple of pairs of lighter weights, along with a low-weight, high-rep workout DVD (Margaret Richard is supposed to have some killer workouts, even thought they are using light weights. I just got one, but haven't tried it yet), could work to "fill in" on days when you can't get to the gym.

Be sure to set up your gym time (kind of like you'd schedule a class: two or three days a week at such-and-such time) and fill in non-gym days with these other activities, and you should be o.k.

Can you take public transportation to the gym?

Since everyone at college works out these days, once you get there you'll find out what everyone else is doing and it will all work out.

You're going to have to go to the gym. Use the 3 mile walk as part of your workout. You'll probably be able to find some exercise classes on campus too.

Congratulations in getting into your college. Which one is it?

Hi Kelley,
You have gotten GREAT advice from the about. You might want to follow a book for wts. Joyce Vedral's daughter Martha wrote a book the "dorm room workout" or something??? You can check it out at amazon!! Good Luck with school!!:D

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your suggestions I don't have a laptop so I'll look for the DVD player I'll at least have a chance of being able to buy one of those. Laptops are just too way expensive.

And I don't have a bike nor are we allow to have them in the dorms, that was my first thought too, but after looking at the dorm and walking around it, there isn't even a place to chain the bike, and they already gave me the rules, no bikes inside as they don't want tire marks up and down the hall. There is a general room but all it has is this really old TV, that I don't think you could even hook up a VCR up to. My mom says it looks like the one her family had when she was a little girl.

As for the bus, there are ones just for my campus, but if I get on the bus and take straight route like I did when they were showing us around, it's an hour and a half ride, as it goes the wrong way. I might be able to get off and take another bus at one of the stops and might be faster, I don't have the bus schedule so that might be a possibility.

But the running or jogging to the gym is a good idea, I just really like Cathe's aerobics much better I have never been into walking/jogging/running. I need dance steps, I guess. But I guess I'll have to, if I can't get the money for a DVD player, before I leave.

Thank you all, you really have gave me a lot of ideas. And I'm going to UCLA.

How about roller blading? Great for the lower body, and another way to get to the gym. Or skateboarding? (I have a student who skateboards everywhere!).
