Going on vacation - advice

Going to California! I will have access to my DVDs but no step or weights. Cardio Kicks and MIC hi/lo should be good for cardio, but strength training is the challenge. I was thinking about buying one of those resistance bands. Any suggestions on brands or types? Do you think I could do MIS or Power Hour without dumbbells or a barbell? Thanks!

Spri Products is the company to go to. They have excellent products and a great book called Rubber Resistance Exercises that has routines in it. I don't have their phone number here, but they have a web site.

Don't forget about walking, too. This is my favorite "out of town" exercise.

Hi, Jillybean!

Another product you may want to consider is something called "Aquabells", marketed by a company called Magellans (focuses on travel supplies; www.magellans.com; 1.805.568.5400). These are, quite simply, dumbbells with water-fillable "plates" that you can pack in your suitcase unfilled, and fill them up when you get to your destination. Each "plate" can be filled with enough water to create a 4-lb weight load, and each dumbbell rod can hold up to 4 "plates" each, for a total weight load of 16 lbs. You can also get water-fillable ankle weights, that when filled creates a weight load of 5 lbs. for long-lever leg work. And then, when you're ready to go home, you just empty the water out of them and re-pack.

Believe it or not, I have these in a drawer in my office, and every now and then during my lunch hour I close my door and belt off a few arm raises, biceps curls/triceps extensions, lunges / squats (skirt permitting), what-have-you.

Have fun in California!

I DID A SEARCH AND FOUND THIS MSG I'D POSTED IN THE PAST FOR A SIMILIAR QUESTION. HAVE A NICE VACATION!

What about pushups? I'd be doing some serious pushups if I didn't have my weights. Heck, I do them anyhow!
Use lot of different positions for variety:

Hands at chest level with a wide grip or a shoulder width grip to hit the chest; consider these same variations on flat, level, and decline angles

If you sort of push up more and round your back at the very top of a push up, you get a little rear delt and upper back too. (This idea came from MTV's Total Body Workout with Keith Byard.)

Put your hands narrow, and low by your ribs, to hit your triceps.

And my favorite--hands a little bit out in front of you to make the front delts do the work. I actually do this on my step, facing the short side, with hands in a hammer position. (From Reebok Extreme Step.) But on the floor should work okay too.

Then, of course there are tricep dips and pull-ups (well, pull ups are rather difficult and still require something to pull up from.)

With your chord and your own body weight--and a little imagination--you can definately still get a great upper body workout.

RE: Hey Jillybean!

Say, I have an idea - thought I'd share it before it dies of loneliness :):):):):) . . .

If you're interested in using Aquabells that I noted in my previous post, I'd be happy to lend them to you - wouldn't be too hard to pass them off to you since we're both Twin Cities gals!

Lemme know if you'd like to do that here on this thread, and we can coordinate!

Okay, I may be expressing an unpopular opinion, but having just come back from Hawaii a couple of weeks ago, without weight gain or loss in strength, I would advise to forego the workouts you are used to doing and incorporate activities that take advantage of the geographical location, such as hiking, biking, swimming, etc. I used to try to bring my workouts with me when vacationing, but ended up wasting too much time/energy at the expense of enjoying the vacation. So, I've opted to no longer bring any equipment/videos with me when going on vacation. I did fun stuff at the beach, including boogie boarding, hiking, and snorkeling, and didn't have to worry about bringing any equipment/videos/DVDs. I found that taking a true "vacation" from ordinary workouts to be rather refreshing. It really is okay to take a break once in a while, and I think you'll find that you don't get out of shape after a week or two as long as the eating is reasonably sane.

JMHO! Have fun. :)
