Godparent Question

My cousin asked me to be godmother to her son! So, what do I do? Do I ask to help her by buying him something for the christening? Or do I buy a gift? I know this might sound like a stupid question, but I really don't know what's expected of me!

I bought the Christening outfits for both my Godchildren. My DH insisted on buying a very special medal for both, as that is a custom in his family.

congratulations! that's such a nice honor for you :)

i think every family may have their own traditions. i come from a large italian family, and it's been the tradition that the godmother buys the christening outfit, and the godfather buys the baby's first cross. i'm sure your cousin will be thrilled with whatever you do!

Being Catholic, I got my godson (nephew) a child's rosary as a baptism gift. I think just a token gift is fine, it doesn't have to be extravagant or costly. Accepting to be a godparent is actually gift enough!

I agree, what an honor. Congrats!

I am unsure of some things (I have never been a godparent) but I too come from a big Italian Catholic family.

You could even think about buying your godson a savings bond. I know my sister did this for her godson.

Hope this helps!

Have fun!

Italian family here too! I was thinking of a crucifix or the christening outfit. Is it rude to just come out and ask her?

It's not rude. In fact, I shopped for the Christening outfits with the Moms. I know my sisters and Mom wanted to have input on the outfits. It was a bonding time for all of us.
