Glutamine

I read an article in Oxygen magazine about the use of glutamine to help build/maintain muscle for intense exercisers. I was hoping for peoples input on this. I am a lean body type and work hard to build muscle. I also love to run and when i train for races I really thin out. It sounds like glutamine may help me preserve some muscle during these periods. Any thoughts to help me decide to try it or not?

Thanks, Courtney

Caspears, figure out how much protein you are taking in roughly per day. For someone like you that is very active and in training mode, you're going to need at .75 gram per pound of body weight per day. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and aids in relieving muscle soreness and recovery. I'm not sure it will particularly add muscle mass (alone) unless you are sufficiently tearing muscle down through lifting and then allowing for recovery which equates to adequate sleep and the right food. If you are sweating buckets while running, you might want to think about iron loss. I lean out in muscle when I ride too much. But if I eat enough quality protein, I will lose it more in fat stores, which is what I want to do.

Thanks for the info. I should get at least that much protein and try to stay on top of it! I may give it a shot in my next training and see if I notice a difference!
