Gizmo Update & Very Sad Shelter News

I think I'll start with the Shelter news so that I can end with the happier Gizmo news.

I mentioned the bad strain of kennel cough that was going through our Shelter in a recent update. Well, as it turns out it is influenza and every single dog at our Shelter will be euthanized (75-80 dogs). People have been told to isolate their own dogs for the next few weeks. So very sad. Please say a prayer for those little babies and the staff and volunteers who are dealing with the heartbreak.

The good news is that we got Gizmo out of there just in time. The other good news is that yesterday Gizmo got his collar off and then the tape so the boarding facility took him over to the vet and the vet said it looked good so he gets to keep it off! Yay!!! He can't have any dry dog food or chew on any bones for another 2 weeks. I have no clue how we are going to keep him from rough housing with our other dogs (all ideas welcome!), as they are all SOOOOOOOO excited to be home and they are playing constantly. Both of Gizmo's ears are standing up now from the collar (I posted new pics in the Dogs, Hair, etc. album).

Oh no Susan.....that is so sad about the shelter!! I was thinking about you and little Gizmo just this morning. My daugher is hooked on a show on the Animal Planet.....I think it was Animal Cops....about an ASPCA shelter in NYC. Very touching show about the 45 fox terriers rescued by the officers there.....reminded me of you and your new little family member, who by the way is soooo adorable!! I am so glad to hear he is better. And, yeah, good luck with the rough housing. My baby Corbin, after his neutering actually had to be put on a sedative....big lughead kept pulling his incision apart.....I swear he was just too happy to be home to feel any pain!!

Susan,
I am so sorry to hear about the animals in the shelter-I will keep them in my prayers-that is heartbreaking.

I am glad to hear about Gizmo-he is very cute and I would have been glad to take care of him for you when you were away!!! Animals are the best and I could not imagine my life with out them.
God bless

Oh my gosh thats horrible about the shelter and the dogs. I will say a prayer for all of them. That has got to be very heartbreaking.

Gizmo looks absolutely adorable in those pictures. I love that picture with all 3 of them!! I am so happy he is home with all of you!!:D

I'm sad about the shelter animals (several years ago, lots of cats had to be euthanized at my local shelter because of ringworm, including a whole roomfull of kittens!), but very happy about Gizmo.

As for how to keep Gizmo from rough play with his siblings...good luck on that! LOL!

Well, as you can all imagine, the Shelter issue has become extremely controversial. A vet from Denver said last night on the Denver news that doing what we are doing here is not necessary, although it was recommended by our state veterinarian. It's also the first thing I came back to at work today, as we hold dog training classes at the Shelter. We had moved them back to the college for the remainder of the semester, but now that it has been recommended that all dogs in Cheyenne be isolated for the next few weeks, so I've decided to cancel all of our classes. :(

Thanks for the offers to take Gizmo while we were away. He'd be hard to give back though because he's just so cute! I can see that we are not going to be very successful at keeping them from playing. They're all SO happy to be home.

Glad to hear Gizmo is doing well. I have been telling DH about him and he actually asked how he was doing last night. I looked and there was a post. Again, glad to hear he is doing well. I live in Boulder so I heard about the shelter situation in WY on the local news last night. It sounds horrible.

Karin - that's funny about your husband asking about Gizmo. :) Other than being without a few teeth permanently and having a bump under his jaw, there will probably be no signs of his abuse. He does cower ever so slightly if you reach down to pick him up. Hopefully in time, that will go away as he learns he can trust us not to hurt him.

Hopefully the Shelter can come out with their own press release, not written by our local media, explaining why they had to take such drastic measures. There is so much conflicting information out there right now. Apparently all the dogs were being put down this morning. :(

Susan - I'm glad Gizmo is healing better. He may always cringe a little - conditioning can get set in pups, as I'm sure you knew. But he'll know that he has nothing to worry about from you.

I am saying many prayers for the soul's of those poor dogs. I see both sides. As I'm sure the shelter does much good, I'd hate to see it get bashed for something it felt it had to do. And I know how deadly the flu can be to dogs. If it did get out into the community that would be horrible. But I could never personally put down that many dogs. My heart would simply break.

Christine,

Sadly enough they had to ask for vets to volunteer to help euthanize because the staff members were too attached to too many of the dogs and just couldn't do it. Like you, I see both sides and I'm just so happy I'm not on the board anymore.

Our Macy is sick now (we just boarded her also) but they think she's got nose mites b/c she's doing that reverse sneeze thing. Of course I thought "Oh great" when she started, but she's only coughed a couple of times, so hopefully hers is just the mites (eeeewwww). She goes to the vet tomorrow. We're sure keeping our vet busy!
They've been treating patients in the parking lot so as not to spread the flu.
