giving freaks bad ideas

I just have to vent about these movies out now... like the Saw ones, Hostel, and now this Untraceable... that show graphic scenes of torture and violence. I've only seen one of these, and I can't help but feel that it's giving bad people bad ideas. My 13-yr-old DD wants to see Untraceable, and I have told her no way. Not only do I not want her to see that kind of thing, but I don't want to support the directors, producers, actors, etc. of these films. Now I really enjoy suspense and horror movies... but this torture stuff... why are they making so many movies like this???? You know there's gotta be freaks out there who watch these, and think, "Gee, that's a great idea!" Grrrrr. Vent over.

I won't watch Hostel or the Saw movies...all that stuff just turns my stomach!I just can't handle all that torture and blood. And i wish my DH wouldn't watch them either. I agree that all the freaks in the world are getting ideas from these kinds of movies!

Another group of movies i won't watch is those'the hills have eyes'! Or 'house of 1000 corpes'(another one of my DH's fav's x( )

I hate horror slasher movies.:-( There is enough of the real life horrors out there, that I do not find watching that stuff on screen entertaining at all.
Although, I did not mind the Hannibal series, its horror, but different in a way. Anthony Hopkins is a favorite though.

I wholeheartedly agree. The hack and slash movies are pointless and nasty. Especially the ones where they paralyze them, torture them...yuck. I do agree, however, that even though VERY gory, I did like Silence of the Lambs. Gore, yes, but so suspenseful and did have a plot. My favorite kind of scary movies are ones like Signs - that was an awesome flick.

DH and I always say there has got to be something wrong in the heads of the writers, etc. who even think this stuff up! I won't watch it/support it either.

I love a good hack and slash movie. Also love campy/bad horror movies as well. What does that say about me? I've have often wonder though, is it giving the wackos out there ideas? Then I figured, no probably not. I think the wackos have it worked out plenty on their own. And the people who write the stuff maybe a little off kilter, too. Who knows? Would I let my 13 yr old watch (if I had one, that is)? NO NO NO NO!!! I think it is def for adults who know the difference between real and fake and don't think its "cool" I watch because I like a harmless scare, and some are quite creepy. I also happen to love vampire and faerie books as well, and good gothic horror. However I can pop in a drama or romantic comedy and be just as happy. But for the kiddies? NOPE!!!!! That's why movies have rating, although I've noticed a lot of parents don't get it. And no, the kids don't understand why we set those limits. It wasn't that long ago we were all begging to watch stuff we should have been watching and our parents said no. We thought they were "like, totally uncool" We survived, and have a probably a few better snoozes for it. I can't imagine being a kid and being woken up by nightmares from the Saw guy. Yikes!!

I liked Saw, and thought the torture aspect of it suited the plot development, but Hostel is just one torture scene after another with no redeaming value.

Even worse, IMO, because it's on TV: I saw a preview of a new comedy that showed a scene where two guys put a rat in a microwave, and later talk about how funny it was (for the first few seconds).

I doubt most people will get inspired to torture people from a movie (unless they are already tweaked in the head), but I think more folks would be curious/cruel enough to stick an animal in a microwave, especially when it is presented for 'laughs' on a show.

honestly movie fan love all types horror, comedy etc. but i don't think anything in hollywood is original. i think of what they write is stuff they read elsewhere in books or even see in the news. like kathryn said they have to be sick in the head already to be inspired. if they don't get it from the movies they will think it up on their own or get it from elsewhere. but i totally see your point of view b/c many ppl mimick things they see in media but thats personal responsibility. if they can't tell the hollywood fantasy from the real world, then they seriously have issues.

kathyrn, i never heard of this program but i certainly will not be watching it!!! x( sick f****.

ITA. I can't stand the brand of horror movie that is out today. I was just in Blockbuster this evening and the shelves were COVERED with tons of these disgusting types of movies. It truly made me ill. I am not against a good scare once in a while and a little blood is no big deal to me either but what happened to movies like Friday the 13th and Halloween?? I could handle that type of stuff. The last horror flick I saw and enjoyed was Scream but since then they've just gone far beyond what I am willing to watch. x(

I haven't seen any of these movies, but I have read descriptions on my favorite movie review site and they sicken me. There is no way I could watch. I love suspence and some gore is okay, but torture is way to troubling for me to watch, let alone my kids--I can't even imagine.

I just wonder, how far can they push it. Will they get more and more sick because audiences continue to be desensitized to violence? I mean what comes next? The horror movies I grew up on are a far cry from what is being made today. What about in the next 20 years?

Kind of freaks me out and I also wonder if it will give some people ideas--the kind of thing I worry about at 3:00am when I have insomnia.

When I was a teenager, we were into slasher and campy horror films like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, but I do agree that the genre has taken an extreme these days. I still enjoy good scary movie, but I find nothing appealing or entertaining about movies like Saw where the violence is, IMO, far too graphic and twisted. I am not as concerned about the movies inspiring copycats as I am about the general desensitization to violence that I think has increased through graphic movies and video games. Gore sells. I'm all for the rating systems, and more importantly, parental oversight, but I think the filmmakers and game creators have to be more responsible.

I grew up with Friday the 13 and Halloween I would so love to let my daughters watch but those deal with the sex issues. I have 8 year old twins and my one wants to watch scary movies but I think there have been only a couple that do not have swearing, sex or gore. What about the original Don't answer the phone I LOVE a good Horror film leave all the crap out.

I have only seen Saw1 the previews thereafter and those make me think WOW what kind of a mind thinks up this stuff (didn't Tarantino do Hostel) but lets face it the stuff is out there with the help of writers or not. My hubby and I just watched Mr. Brooks and the scene where he breaks into the house it is a deadbolt he slips a magnetic tool and slides it across we both said well thats great for them to teaach someone to break in.

My newspaper had a far-too-graphic review of Untraceable yesterday, and my reaction was the same as yours! Just the review was too much for me. WHY are movies like this "necessary?" I can't see any purpose at all.
