Get ripped with kickboxing???

Hello everyone:

Do you think you can get ripped doing mainly kickboxing or does one need to do weights also to get those killer arms and legs? I do both now and am happy with my arms and my legs, but have always wondered if Illaria and Patricia (Powerstrike) have to do weights on the side to get those ripped arms.

I'm pretty sure Ilaria does weights (at least sword work, which is like a weight workout). I read an article about her fitness journey, and she pretty much started out lifting weights before she got into martial arts. I assume she kept it up, but she also probably had a good base of muscle to tide her over).

I do think you can get in good shape with martial arts, and ripped to some extent, especially if you use weighted gloves (building up to them and not overdoing) and supplement with push-ups, chin-ups and tricep dips.

I would have to say Ilaria does weights. Patricia isn't ripped at all, so she might not. But I don't think you can get arms like Ilaria's without lifting.

I took an "Intro to the Martial Arts" class a few years ago, which always began with a 20 minute workout that included a lot of different push-ups (think P90X to some extent), ab work, plyometrics, etc that was completely separate from the martial arts part of the class. When I talked to the instructor about what he actually did at his dojo, he indicated that they do a much longer version of that workout at each class with other exercises added, like pull-ups.

So, I'd guess that if someone is really seriously studying some form of martial arts, they're probably doing resistance training, though it may not be weight-lifting in the sense that we tend think about it.

My son is currently taking martial arts classes and I've hung around the place long enough to note that the women who either teach classes or take some of the classes don't have Cathe-like arms. And so far, I've seen only one male teacher who looks like a bodybuilder. So I'm thinking that if you want ripped arms, you really have to lift weights.

I agree with Pinky on this one. I think you can get nicely toned arms by doing kickboxing. By toned I mean no wiggles or jiggles (especially in the tricep area!) But to get arms like Ilaria has or anyone who has popping biceps, triceps and shoulders most women have to lift weights.
