Genetics and buff bodies?

Hi Shelia,

Oh boy! Sigh! I hope I didn't insult anyone! Again, I was not saying people are in shape *because* of genetics. I'm in shape and that's because I work out and try to eat right. But I am not 14-15% body fat with muscles sticking out and I still look good! :7 What I was asking was, "Do some people work out just as hard as other people, eat the same things, work out the same way and the same amount of time and get bigger (not necessarily better) results than the other?" ....and the answer is YES! Genetics plays a part! :p

Again, I was just curious and hope I didn't insult anyone!

oh no I don't think you said anything insulting.I was talking of people you come in contact in everyday.I am sorry if I lead you to believe you did- big hugs:)

Wayne, you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong about this one! A human being cannot change his or her shape. I've been everywhere from way too thin to obese, fit to unfit, and my legs have been consistently shapely while my waist has been consistently thick in proportion to the rest of my body. It's important to accept your limitations in order to be the best you can be. And genetics impose limitations. The challenge in life, as Dani has said, is to be the best YOU can be. And that IS NOT a cop-out.

Shonie-
Same to you as I say to Wayne: you are WAAAYYYY off on this one. Totally disagreeing with you. If you don't know your limits, you can never reach your potential.

Nancy, I've seen Shonie first hand. Her little tight, chiseled, muscle-bound body is nothing but hard work! She probably weighed mored than any of us on that trip but she was obviously the tiniest -tightest person there. Reason why, is exactly what she said in her post. She works HARD for it!

I don't know about you, but while I want to be in shape & buff like Cathe, I can't or won't dedicate THAT much time for results (up to 4 hours a day). Therefore, I have my trouble spots.

Not to take a hit on you, Shonie. Obviously we are a more sedentary society. There are elevators, escalators, desk jobs, cars, you get the picture. We think getting a good 60 minutes a day, 5 days a week is way better than the average Joe in America, that follows the old 30 minutes, 3 times a week recommendation.

I guess a good eye opener would be to try and do a farmer's, rancher's, construction worker's job? I don't know? I just remember hearing about the old folk's waking up at the crack of dawn & not getting to bed until late in the evening doing a hard day's of honest work.

Marla-
I know Shonie looks like a million bucks and works very hard, but even she had to have medical procedures to change her body shape. Short of medical procedures, we are all limited by our body shapes. That's all I'm trying to say. Dani can be the best Dani she can be, and look like a million bucks to us, but she can't have someone else's body shape without help from the medical community (which I'm sure Dani would not be interested in).

I don't know if even the medical community can change body shape. I had liposuction last which shaved off some inches but my body shape is the same. You must be speaking of something other than lipo :)

Agreed Nancy!! :7 http://www.phpbbforfree.com/forums/images/smiles/agreed.gif

Candi-
I really don't know much about medical procedures, since I stay as far away from them as possible. I thought Shonie said her legs looked much better after lipo. That's all I'm referring to.

Shonie is saying that people use genetics as an excuse for not working hard, but I think it's important to keep genetics in mind so that you don't have unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations can lead to constant frustration, and not appreciating what you have accomplished. In general, I find that women are too hard on themselves rather than that they make excuses for being lazy. In general, I think there are far too many women who honestly believe if they just work out enough they can look like some celebrity. I think it's healthier to just try to be the best that you can possibly be. I'm certainly not encouraging laziness in any way. I just think women need to be more realistic with themselves and give themselves more credit.

Hi Danielle! Yes that is absolutely all that matters. Your getting compliments on your shape so your doing everything right. I've started a jogging program myself. Qudos to you for training for your marathon. I don't know if I would have it in me to try out for one of these. I personally hate to jog LOL We are our own worst critics. My DH too is always complimenting me on my shape. However, I'll always say that this or that could still stand improvements. But I will say this, the one thing that definitely did it for me was NO SUGAR at all in anything. This took some getting used to but I conquered it. My BF% definitely went down. The size 0s that I now wear are loose. So just keep reaching further heights in your fitness quest. I personally think you look GREAT & your very pretty.

Can't wait for us to meet! Kathy:D

Im pretty sure genetics has alot to do with it cuz I have had cut abs for some time now and Ive hardly ever to any ab exercises. id say the last time I did them was like 15 years ago..thats about the frequency. Although when I go to the gym people ask me what I doto get them and all i do is cardio.

Completely respecting your opinion too -- but disagree. If you put limits on yourself, you will never reach your true potential. Yep...Tony Robbins has gotten inside my head :)

Shonie

Marla -- totally agree with you.

It's not about what you CAN achieve as much as what you are willing to do to achieve it. Bodies are amazing things and can achieve a LOT given a lot of different factors (diet, exercise, etc). So it's not impossible based on your genetics. It may be harder to build muscle and/or drop fat -- but not impossible.

You are completely right about the farmer's/rancher's/construction worker job. I'd drop dead if I had to work for 8 or 9 hours doing one of those! But I'd probably be pretty buff and not have to spend as much time in the gym.

Shonie

Gee that's just great CarmenE. And for about 5 minutes I thought I liked you. :p

Just kidding--I'm really just terribly jealous.
