GE Money Bank--what a disaster! (a little long)

Tell me what you guys think of this.

I opened a credit card account w/them that had a 0% interest rate for the first year (it was thru Whitehall for a specific piece of jewelry, as if you guys couldn't guess LOL). I made a payment via their automated phone system in October & got a confirmation number. I then made a payment in November that was I think 3 days late (this happens to me on occasion b/c I only pay my bills once a month).

Well, for whatever reason the October payment was never processed & b/c the November payment was late they're claiming I missed 2 consecutive payments & cancelled my promotional 0% interest, then back-charged me interest in the amount of $500. This is just killing me b/c my BALANCE was at $500 (paid down from $3500 in one stinking year!) so they basically doubled it.

They allege that I entered my checking account incorrectly thru their automated phone system so the missed payment in October was my fault (even though neither they nor my bank notified me there was a problem). I just can't believe this is true--I mean, I know my account # by heart, plus they repeat it back to you to confirm it's correct. Could I have entered it in wrong, then heard it wrong, & confirmed the wrong account #? I don't think so.......and coincidentally this all happened right after I sent them a huge payment that brought me close to paying off the account before my one year was up.

So get this--I can file a claim for the interest in small claims court. :p I'm sending the paperwork today. They're in El Paso, I'm in NJ. Do you think anyone will show up? It'll cost them more to send an attny than it would to just credit the interest back, even if they have a local rep. Of course if they don't show at court I get my money back automatically........and I think I probably will anyway b/c they've behaved so unethically.

My other question I guess would be what about the interest I'll be charged between now & my court date?

The exact same thing happened to me with one of my credit card companies. I know that was just a scam to get more money, so I paid off the card and closed the account.

I hope you can get this straightened out and they end up paying for your court fees.

We've had nothing but problems with GE, and hopefully will be able to pay them off and be done with them.

I think if you have a confirmation number when paying over the phone, there is no way they have a leg to stand on. IMO. I don't like hearing about these company's trying to get one over on the public. Good luck with your suit}(

i had something like that happen to me to. I argued on the phone with best buy for a while. I ended up paying off the account and closing it. I would do as much argueing as you can see if they wont change there minds. I think its a scam I am really sorry this happened to you

Oh I closed the account for sure. I hesitated b/c I think I'll be moving soon & for whatever reason the more credit cards you have w/a balance 50% or less of the limit improves your credit. But I'm just appalled by their behavior--especially their CS department, they were so incredibly rude & nasty.

I think what bothers me the most is the total lack of recourse--I mean, they basically just made this decision that they were gonna double my charges without any justification.

And if I didn't work for local government I wouldn't even have thought of filing in small claims court b/c I probably wouldn't have known about it.

Hey, maybe I should write a letter to 7 On Your Side too......see how they like that kind of PR.......}(

I think the more bad exposure you can create for them the better, companies like this need to have people "tell their story" so more people avoid them...once that happens they'll either be bankrupt or have to start acting ethically to get more business.

Keep us posted on the outcome of your suit against them, I know it is time consuming to do that but I think more people should... they get away with crap like this b/c people don't want to waste their valuable time fighting them so they just pay & move on and the company can continue to do business as always...

Sorry this happened to you.

Laura- Even if the fiasco with orig on time payment hadnt occurred it is common ploicy that introductory interest rates are null & void if you are 1 day late on any payment. I know this from experience. Read the fine print in your agreement I bet it states this.
Sorry it happened to you. Best bet is to transfer balance to a zero % card and close account.... be sure and make that new payment EARLY! BofA / Mbna did same to us & we had a credit line of $45,000.00!! with a balance of 300.00. I think they were sorry they were such jerks!
