Gaining body fat fast after 46

This is a cry for help to everyone. Please help!!!!

It seems to happen right after my 46th birthday! All of a sudden I'm very round in the middle and it's very easy to see because I'm 5' tall.

I workout and eat clean (most of the time ...... I have off day on the weekend) like before. So seems like I have to change it up and I understand diet is the key.

I see that Cathe had consulted with a dietitian. Could you share what their advice was? Everyone, could you please help?

Thank you!

I hope you don’t mind me responding, obviously I’m not Cathe.

I’m 45.5, and I have noticed in the last few years that I cannot eat whatever I want any more. It isn’t due to a slower metabolism, but rather I seem to be more sensitive to certain foods. Have you kept a food diary/journal and tracked what you are eating, your calories and how the food makes you feel, like your energy level, fuzzy thinking, bloat, swollen fingers/ankles, distended belly, headaches, crankiness, fatigue, thirst?

I have noticed that I am more sensitive to sugar, I cannot have any except what occurs naturally in yogurt and berries, and even then only in small quantities. Reaction: energy crashes, headaches, crankiness, swollen fingers, thirst, fatigue.

I am more sensitive to salt. I retain much more water when I add salt to my food. Reaction: bloat, thirst.

I am sensitive to wheat. Reaction: bloat, look like I’m 3 months pregnant bloat.

I am more sensitive to corn. Reaction: same as wheat, plus swollen fingers, achy joints.

I cannot tolerate cow cheese, I seem to do okay with yogurt and whey, but not cow cheese. Reaction: same as wheat and corn.

I have now put eggs on my list, reaction: bloat.

What does seem to help is to eat things in rotation, like if I have wheat today, I won't eat it again for a couple of days.

I would also recommend drinking a lot of water. If you still feel something is amiss after logging your food, calories, reactions, etc… then you might want to have your thyroid function levels tested.

I'm not that age yet

But, I was told by a trainer that allergies can cause weight gain or put you into a plateau so I think what Janis said makes a lot of sense.

You should really look at the celiac sites. I recently was diagnosed and found that many of my food intolerances went away when I stopped eating gluten. My intestines were being shredded and could not digest anything. The bloating, achy joints etc can all be symptoms. It did take time to heal but I have been able to eat many of the foods that I could not before.
Just a thought!

You may want to get your hormone levels checked (testosterone, pregesterone & estrogen) as well as your adrenal function and thyroid. Perimenopause/Menopause can cause things to get out of balance which could be a possible cause of weight gain. A great book that talks about this in detail is The Wisdom of Menopause by Dr. Christiane Northrup.

Thanks Heather! I think I will go gluten free for a period of time, looking at my list of reactive food, in total, makes it stand out! How long were you gluten free before you started adding items back in to your diet? And, did you avoid oats?

Hey Janis

I had gotten really sick by the time we figured out what was going on. I would say that the first few months I had to keep things really plain and simple. Nothing hard to digest. Then I slowly started adding things back in. I still have a hard time with beans, nuts and brassica veggies but it is getting better.
I have been really hoping that the lactose intolerance will eventually go away as well but no luck yet. I have heard that it can take years to heal fully if you were really not well. You need to be your own personal guide. There is a blood test that your doctor can do that is relatively accurate but you need to be eating wheat to have it show positive (at least a month of eating wheat). As well there is the small intestine biopsy Mine of course did not show positive just to add to the confusion.
I do eat oats but only certified gluten free oats. I do not eat barley or rye. (No malt). I am very sensitive to it now. I recently got "glutened" at a restaurant (tiny piece of a croton at the bottom of a salad) and I looked just like my sister who is 6 months pregnant and was in bed for the day.

Anyways, check out the gluten free forum on the celiac sites for better info. I think in the end you really have to listen to you body but when you were listing you intolerances and responses it reminded me of my own description!

Good luck
Heather

I want to add that you should get some blood work done for diabetes. Its simple..just fast 10 hours and go get some blood drawn. I recently got thick around the middle and can't lose any weight. I thought all these new symptoms were from quitting smoking cold turkey but it turned out to be type 2 diabetes. I am currently working on changing my whole way of eating to lowcarb...Peggy

Hi TG! Actually anything that I could possibly contribute to this thread has already been suggested/discussed. Way to go everyone!
