Full marathon training

I'm not sure about a "formal" plan but the last time I trained for a full marathon, I used a 3 day a week schedule. Tues/Thurs/Sat, long run was always on saturday. The days I didn't run were spent lifting. I usually took 1 or 2 days a week totally off to recover.

I've never done a full, but google FIRST. It is Furman Institute......don't know the rest. Anyway, it is based on 3 runs, but 3 quality runs (I think it is 1 speed session, 1 tempo and 1 long run).

There's also a book: Run Less, Run Faster.

Momto4-how many miles your weekday runs?

My "baseline" is 6 miles 3 times a week, tues, thurs, and sat. That's what I run every week when I'm not training for a race. My typical training schedule would keep tuesday between 6 or 8 miles. Thursday would usually be 8 to 10 miles, and saturday was always my long run, increasing by 2 miles every week up to 20 or 22 miles. The closer I got to race day, I would just up the miles as I felt necessary, backing off a bit a month or so before the race. It really wasn't a formal schedule but it worked for the 3 of us that trained together. We all managed to train successfully without any training or over used injuries, and we finished with respectable times.

FM is such a time consuming when it comes to training. My longest run so far was 14 miles doing 22 miles seems so looong LOL!
Thank you:)

The last time I trained for a marathon was in 2009...but I did only run 3X a week. Usually a 5-6 miles one day, about 8-10 another, then Saturday was my long run. I did actually run 26 miles before the actual race, probably 3 weeks out. Vary your shorter runs with speed/hills, and just get your long runs in every week, taper after that 26 miler (which isn't necessary, but I think that's what helped made the Philly Marathon so much easier).

Good luck!! I am sure you will do well!!

I wanted to say that the last time I trained for a marathon, I did plyo legs from STS once a week, and it made running so much easier for me. I will certainly be incorporating plyo legs into a training schedule again.

Yes, I agree with this...doing some sort of Plyo training helps, I do this as well.

I finally signed up for a full marathon, little bit scared & want to slap my face after the fact, LOL.
I did 17 miles today & my legs were tired but soaked my legs with cold bath & that helps tremendously. Have you guys heard sport legs supplement?

Unless your race is next weekend, the fact that your long run is already 17 miles means you are going to have NO problems getting ready!!!!

Ice baths are a godsend - they truly work. I *think* I've used Sport Legs in the past, but ... it was a long time ago so I don't really remember anything about it, or why I even got it in the first place. I recall that perhaps it's an electrolyte supplement (essentially salt tabs?)?

Sound like were on the same training "schedule". I just did my 17 mile run yesterday. A bath with Epsom salts always works wonders for me.

I think I have 9 more weeks to go before the marathon. November 3rd. I need to get some of Epsom salt, where do I get them?
