frustrated

runfree

Cathlete
iam very frustrated this morning. Last week in the middle of my cycle I was down half pd and figured this week I would probably be down at least a pd well I am up 2 pds. I dont understand this. I have been eating good, exercising. I actually have increased from 5 days to 6 adding another day of running since I am training for a 10k in may. I even resisted a potluck at work the other day and the girls have been eating junk like crazy in front of me and I was so proud of myself and for what,no results. I have a cruise in 2 weeks and was hoping to drop 5 pds. I started 3 weeks ago eating lots of veggies, fruits and chicken and I run 15-18 miles a week and teach bootcamp 2x week. I even added exgtra strength days and nothing. Makes me wonder why am I doing this . I will be 40 in a few months is this why, am I doomed?

Some thoughts...Do you track/log your food? Are you eating enough to support your work outs? How much weight training are you doing? Make sure you don't let it slide. It's just as important if not MORE SO then cardio-depending upon the individual ofcourse. :)

Do you keep track of calories? Lots of fruit and veggies, believe it or not, can translate into lots of calories. I'm 53 and have lost 13 pounds recently, so I doubt if it's your age.

That is not a very big fluctuation in weight. That is exactly why I no longer bother to weigh myself. I just pay attention to how my clothes are fitting. It can drive you crazy with this one or two lbs up or down. Good luck and don't worry so much about it. Tomorrow could say something different again.

I do not gauge my achievements based on my weight on a daily basis. I use a body fat scale, measuring tape, and weight myself 4 times a month. How are your clothes fitting? I know that several people log everything that they put in their mouths but I am too much of a rebel for that. However, I do mind WHAT I put in my mouth. Since January, I have cut many things from my diet and have noticed significant weight loss. Maybe if you logged what you eat for about a week, you would get an idea of what the caloric content of your meals is? All the other posters are correct...diet is VERY important. I just don't belong to the daily counting method. Good luck!

well I went from having the dairyqueen 1-2x week to not at all and several pops daily to one pop every other day. I eat 3 meals a day with 2 snacks if needed usually protein bars. I eat ligh wheat bread with peanut butter 2 slices ,70cal for breakfast with a peice of fruit, lunch usually is a salad with chicken,or crab low cal dressing the packets which are 25 cal a piece, ususally fruit or subway roast beef 6inch on wheat and a bag of baked chips or ww meals. dinner has been chicken, baked potato and veggies. I have a snack if needed but try not to. Iwill enjoy some cheezits from time to time but not the bag. I also is I get a craving will have some tootsie rolls or those mini betty crocker desserts that are 150cal I figure thats better than a blizzard. I feel that I am eating plenty to support my workouts. when I first added heavy wts I felt hungry and tired but that has passed and I usually eat if I am hungry. Ihave never been able tostarve myself. Its just frustrating to me that all my hard work doesnt seem to be paying off. I have friends that drop wt left and right ,no problem and I have to fight to get 5 bls off. I do however feel leaner , I must admit that but Ifelt best at 125 lbs and it seems that my body just dont and wont let me get there again. I have been weighing in at 131.5-133.5, the 131.5 being last week and I havent weighed that in a long time, ith ad been fluctuating between 132.5-133.5. a couple pds on me goes a long way because I am short. when I drop 5lbs it looks like 10 and I really wanted to look great on this cruise and I also want to look the best I can when I turn 40. anyway, thanks for the tips , I appreciate them all.

this is ME! i am a runner too, and i run about 5 days/week and do STS 3 days/week. some days i run twice, once before work and once during lunch with a coworker. i workout a lot. i eat 1800 calories a day and log everything. my body will not go below 125 lbs and i fluctuate between 125-133. it's simply happy at this weight, and you know what? i'm fine with it. i am very healthy, strong, muscular, and fit. i had a beautiful healthy baby boy last year and lost all the baby weight by the time he was 6 months old. i can't complain!

you know what? who cares what the number on the scale says! i can run 8 miles in the early morning before work while most people are still sleeping or slogging out of bed!

scale numbers don't measure fitness!!!!

so.. go easy on yourself. keep on working out, increase your running mileage, don't compare yourself to others.. and good luck on your 10K!!

I think alot of how I feel is because swimsuit season is here and i feel gross in a bathing suit. I feel that my mid section is thicker and I feel that age and gravity is taking ahold of everything and I cant do anything about it, it really depresses me. I am having a hard time with these changes my body is going thru. I have never been heavy or had a wt problem and for me, this is the biggest I have been is yrs. I really want my in shape body back and nothing is working. but thanks for your advice and support.

I would not worry about one weigh in. One weigh in is not a trend - if you really gained two pounds, that would mean 7000 extra calories eaten. Do you think you ate that much more?

If not - There are so many things that makes a body go up temporarily: medications, eating a heavy meal the night before, salty foods, weighing not-quite-empty, starting a heavy strength training program (hydrated muscles), drinking more water than usual, a scale battery that is going dead, a scale that is no longer levelled or not on a level floor ... the list goes on. If your clothing is fitting the same, you might want to re-weigh or re-measure yourself in a few days or try not worry about it until your next weigh in.

Two weeks in a row, if you're going up, probably means something is off in your eating or activity level. In that case, tracking both even more carefully than usual is something to consider.

One thing, if you've been on a restricted diet for a long time, had a high calorie deficit through increased exercise, or even poor eating habits (that was my issue), your body may have shifted to a lower metabolic rate to protect itself. Sometimes it's necessary to eat *more* for awhile, getting back to normal, and building up muscle, and burn the last bit off that way.

This all comes from my own times of frustration when I was losing over 50 pounds over at SparkPeople, two and a half years ago :)
