frustrated with lack of progress

I'm getting really tired of the struggle to lose more weight but don't think I'll feel satisfied until I do. I gained close to 8 lbs since I quit smoking 9 months ago...around the same time I added more weight training too. I haven't changed in the size of my clothes...gained weight but basically stayed the same size. I am trying a new rotion with more circuit training but summer is about here and I still don't feel comfortable in my bikini. It's to the point where I wonder if I've hit my "set point". I don't know what else to do.

I hate to say it, but.... are you watching your diet?

I do not ever lose one pound, or even one ounce, unless I am militant about every morsel that goes into my mouth (because far too many morsels tend to). This is all very unfortunate since I'm a cardio wh*re and would rather do 50 hours of cardio a week, personally! :)

dont be frustrated i gained 10 lbs when i quit smoking and yes i ran it off on the treadmill you might need a little extra working out then after your fit you can slow your workout down funny thing i have to lift lighter weights with more reps or ill get bulked but when i lift lighter weight with more reps i tone fast no more than 2 ten pds weight for me even in my legs the same gos as a matter of fact i gained weight doing slow and heavy cathe :) love her workouts though:) hang in there

I think you should feel pretty darn good about yourself for giving up smoking! That's huge. Otherwise, I agree with Marie. It's probably going to take a long, hard look at your diet.

For me it's all about diet too. Last year I had been working out for over an hour 6 days a week but not really watching my diet. I then got serious about my diet and lost 1-2 lbs per week while cutting my workouts back to 4 times a week for under an hour.

Congrats on quicking smoking, thats hard by its self! I agree w/everybody else on diet! Are you keeping a food journal? That really helps me!

Your story sounds similar to mine,I went about 5 mnths w/no weight loss and just said The H*ll With It and joined Weight Watchers and that programed showed me that i wasn't eating enough!since joining I've lost 25pds since janurary!(still got a ways to go though;-))

Maybe your not eating enough?
Good Luck!

Thanks for everyone's posts. I just can't believe I don't eat enough. 15-1600 during Mon-Fri. I think I'm frustrated because I am going to have to get really militant about my weekends and its a struggle because I am so good during the week that I need to be a little relaxed on weekends and am finding that I cannot without maintaining at this point. I'm going to say I eat 100% clean 5 days and 75% on the weekend.

Does anyone have any motivational tools to keep militant on weekends without feeling seriously deprived?

This is just my opinion, but it bothers me when people say they're "militant" about a diet. I honestly believe you need to allow some leeway for a little bit of enjoyment. Otherwise, you'll probably just burn out. Now, if you honestly enjoy eating super clean seven days a week, hey - go for it! But I think what you say you're doing sounds pretty good.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you said while you have gained weight, you haven't gained inches. To me that's a good sign, because it sounds like you're packing on muscle with the weight training, but not bulking up.

Hang in there. I know you'll find a balance.

Thanks,...I realize that is a good sign. But sometimes I just feel big and heavy instead of just strong because of that "stupid" layer of fat on top of all my hard earned muscles. You are right and I agree that I am afraid I would burn out if I was militant for 7 days but I'm wondering if that's what its gonna take to reach my goal. If I can just find an easier way??

Hello

Congratulations on packing up smoking. I stopped smoking Nov 2005 and started to exercise more to offset the weight gain. Now I'm addicted to Cathe instead of cigarettes lol.

Anyway try not to be too hard on yourself. You have done a wonderful job giving up the cigarettes. It is one of the most difficult things to do and also the most beneficial for health. I remember I used to get really fed up with working out so much and not seeing much weight loss. However after a few months the weight will start shifting again.

I used to spend a huge amount of time just doing cardio and very little weights. Now I do cardio 3 times a week and weight training 2 times. With a circuit training DVD on the sixth day. Eventually you will see some amazing results. As for clean eating, yes watching what you eat the majority of the time is important. But at the end of the day. This a lifelong journey and I think you have to get the balance right.

Once again congratulations you've done a wonderful job.

Cheers
Laura :)

Although I have never smoked, I completely understand being frustrated when you work out a lot amd fail to lose weight. I work out 10 hours+ a week (30 miles running) + (weights and cardio) and if I do not strictly watch the calorie (and alcohol) intake I maintain my weight and never ever lose. Weight loss is all about calorie reduction as far as I am concerned.

Congratulations on quitting smoking and know that perseverance is the key for long term success.

Congratulations on quitting smoking, I'm sure that took a lot of discipline to stop.

As for the physique. I'm with everyone else. Diet is key and I think you have to make a choice about what is more important to you. Eating or attaining the body you want. A first step might be to get away from the "deprived" mentality that is sometimes related to clean eating.

Tracy

Thanks all... I am thrilled that I quit smoking and very proud of it. "Deprived" is when I think I can't have my wine or some fries with my sandwich over the weekend. x(

I love to eat clean the rest of the time. :)
