We are looking for a french bulldog puppy. Very hard to find. Anyone know of where we can look in Northern NJ? Happy Holidays to all!

Hi. I have an English Bulldog and the breeder where we purchased our dog also breeds frenchies - but I live in Central Pa.

You could call your local vet and inquire if they know of any breeders that they would recommend.

When I had my dog at the vet there was a lady in the waiting room with a frenchie and she was sooooooooo cute!!!!

Good luck! :)

Try the American Kennel Club - they have lists of breeders. Just make sure to ask a lot of questions. Bull Dogs - any of them - can have a lot of health problems, so you want to make doubly sure that any breeder you choose is very reputable.

You can also visit local dog shows and speak with the owners of the dogs you like. And don't be afraid to travel a bit. I drove 5 hours for my first Aussie and 2 hours for my second one - and both are the best dogs I've ever had.

Good luck!

Lots of good advice here. I'll add inquiring with your local or regional french bulldog club. I'm sure if you try googling french bulldog club, you can find the national organization and all its members. That's how I found an excellent pom breeder... she was actually listed among the top 10 pom breeders in the nation... and our little guy is the cutest thing and an absolute character (Can you tell I'm in love? ) Of course, I also love our mixed breed shelter rescue, too!! Good luck! (BTW, we used to have an english bulldog... she lived to be almost 14)

I don't know if all breeds have this but we rescued an Italian Greyhound 7 yrs ago. He was a yr old when we got him but I was happy not to have to go through all the house training. Maybe you could look into rescuing one? We only had to pay for adoption fees which covered vet treatments and stuff. It was a long process of home visits and all but well worth it to see if we were a match for the breed.

I would start by going ot the National Breed Club and then go to breeder and rescue referral. They might also have listings for local breed clubs.

I'd also make sure they are a reputable breeder, club members, health testing, following Code of Ethics, etc.

There aren't any regulations to be a breeder listed on the AKC site, so I wouldn't use them as my first reference. Anybody, even puppymills, can be listed on the AKC site.

Ah frenchies as my breeder told me when we were so fortunate to add are guy to our family " Frenchies are like chips ,U can't just have one ",LOL. Great suggestions in previous post but just wanted to give U a heads up about Frenchies when looking for reputable breeders. There are alot of "Brokers " out there " selling Frenchies from overseas and alot of sad stories to go along with their sales. The dogs are commonly not socialized nor breed for health , just for money because of what these brokers see as a lucrative price tag on these poor pups.So avoid brokers at all costs!!!! The Frenchie community is pretty fierce and protective of the breed and taking the time to get to know the commmunity is important because of the health issues that Frenchies have . Going to local Dog shows ,researching French bulldog club in your area will help. A good ,caring breeder will not give up a pup easily, it takes time . The process between researching breed , getting to know breeders and getting our pup was about 10 mos. The French bulldog rescue center is another resource but they typically do not adopt out to families with small children if U have any. Having a Veternarian that has extensive knowledge of the breeed is important. Frenchies tend to be very sensitive to certain vaccines, medicines and have dietary issues. A constant need of attention from usually one primary adult they attatched themselves to, and calm households. They tend to react to stimuli ,stressors very easily ,usually thru heath conditions. They are not a sickly breed just high maintenance in regards to allergies , stomach issues, etc.. They are such sweet little stubborn clowns, good luck and sorry for rambling on and on.. ;-)

They are so cute! I considered the breed before I got my puggle. I spoke with a breeder named Kim in Maywood: 973-216-7524.

We rescued a one-year old Boxer in 2003 and it was well worth it. If you do a search for french bulldog rescues, you'd probably be surprised at how many are out there looking for homes...sometimes puppies, too!

I tried that when I was looking. There aren't any in this area. And the rescues I did contact didn't seem interested in placing a dog in my home. It was a very frustrating process & it was kind of hurtful. I couldn't figure out why these people didn't think I was good enough to adopt one of their dogs.

It's funny to hear you say that. My husband and I both commented during our application process that we could've gotten a kid easier than it was to get a dog!
