free weights vs. barbells

Cathe, I hope this day finds you not too uncomfortable and ready for the big event.:)

Here is my question. I've done PS series off and on since '99 and PH since last fall in different rotations. I do not own a barbell and substitute free weights. I can usually equal your amount of free weights for an exercise. But when it comes to the barbell on the meaty portion of the back for squats &/or lunges, I can't handle nearly the amount of weight. Is this because of holding the weights on my shoulders instead of my back?

Also for the triceps exercise in PH with the barbell is it OK to try a wrist position similar to that of a hammer curl? Or should I hold the free weights just like the barbell is held?

Thanks in advance for your or any one else's reply :)

Hi, not Cathe but butting in anyway. :)

In response to your tricep question - I wouldn't see the problem with holding the dumbbells in the hammer curl position as opposed to the barbell position... if I'm picturing what you mean correctly, Cathe does that with dumbbells for the tricep extensions in PS/CST.

Thanks, Lizzie. I remember her doing tri's like a hammer curl in PS- CST too. :)

I remember Cathe answering a question like this a while ago. She said it was fine to use the dumbbells in the way you describe. (FYI: "Freeweights" refer to both dumbbells and barbells vs. machine weights).

Thanks for the help. PS thanks for the FYI tip too :)
