For those with curly hair

What products if any do you use on your hair? I've tried a whole range of different things and am never quite happy: mousses leave my hair crunchy, serums/gels don't hold the curl, etc.

Anyway, I finally found a perfect product (Clinique's Defined Curls) and it's been discontinued! So I'm desperate for suggestions.

BTW, I don't dry my hair, just put product in and leave to dry naturally.

Thanks!

I don't like the way curly hair products make my hair feel - either crunchy like you said, or weighted down and even greasy. So I just suffer. :p

I have very naturally curly hair and I have never found the perfect product so I'm interested too!! My hair is super thick and I wear it long because otherwise I just look like Little Orphan Annie. (not a good look for me!)

I've been using SunSilk products- Anti-Frizz and 24/7 creme and they aren't too bad for $3 a bottle. I also use a gel & mousse from Tresemme, can't remember the name (curl defining or something like that). I've found that pony tails and clips are my usual summer 'do!! ;-)

Oh yeah, and I NEVER dry my hair, talk about frizz city!!

Jess! LOL! I like the Little Orphan Annie comparison--personally I always call it the Buckwheat Syndrome. :+

The best product I have EVER used (& believe me, I've used a lot!) is Phyto's Phytospecific Beauty Styling Creme. It's kind of like a pomade but not as greasy. You only need maybe a dime sized amount & it works wonders on frizz but really defines the curl.

Use Nexxus Humetress as a leave in conditioner. I comb it through my wet hair and then dry with a diffuser. It defines the curl, and in combination with the diffuser, eliminates frizz.

Yeah, funny now, but not so funny when I decided to cut my hair and asked my dh how he liked it and the words Little Orphan Annie were his response. :( (he loves my long hair!) Good thing my hair grows fast!! And LOL @ Buckwheat Syndrome!!

Do you get the Phyto's at a salon? Is it really pricey? I have had Kiehl's hair pomade used on my hair before and it seemed to work really well.

My hair is curly, but very fine-- it tends to get super frizzy and dry out easily. I tried Aveda Curly shampoo/conditioner/curl enhancer, and it really helped to define the curl, though the shampoo made my hair dry. I switched to Aveda Shampure and still use the curl enhancer. I love what that combo does to my hair. Shampoo and conditioner is about $9 each, and the enhancer is around $20 (I think).

:)

I'm always on the look out for good curly hair products. I've found that layering LOTS of products seems to work the best for me. I generally get my hair really soaking wet and then wash it with a conditioner (my current favorite is Pureology -- the one in the lavender bottle), then I spritz with a leave-in conditioner (Ouidad's Botanical Boost), followed by Graham Webs Stick Straight Gel, topped off with Graham Webs Making Waves Gel. Sometimes I use KMS Curl Creme, but just a tiny dab because it will make your hair feel greasy if you use too much. I usually let my hair air dry, but a diffuser dryer works very nicely when I'm in a hurry.

My hair is naturally curly and very frizzy! I've tried several different products but always go back to the Matrix Smooth and Sleek. I use the shampoo, conditioner, Extreme #3 creme and then add "just a drop" of the oil (can't remember the name of that).

I have curly hair, and over the years I've developed a few routines. I only use shampoo about once a week. Other days, I don't do anything, or I just wet it and use conditioner as a kind of shampoo, making sure to massage my scalp well, which seems to do a good job cleaning it. When I do use shampoo, I use very nice, mild stuff without any harsh detergents. I also am a believer in mixing products, but I never like my hair to look like it has stuff in it, so I just use stuff that tames the frizz and defines the curls. I really like Aveda products. I use their Be Curly as well as their hair serum (I forget the name). I also use Sebastian Texturizer as well as a tiny bit of Chi Silk Infusion (although I don't often straight iron my hair, which is what the Chi is for). I don't use much of any of these, but the mixture seems to work well.

I also just discovered something great for curly hair-extra-virgin coconut oil! I've been putting in on my dry hair right before washing it (with shampoo) and also using a tiny bit in my hair right out of the shower, after the other products. It seems to completely kill the frizz, make my hair very soft, and also the curls are defined and lay down nicely. I feel like I've made an important discovery!

I heard the book "Curly Girl" is also full of tips for our kind. Good luck! :p

I found the perfect product for me! I have EXTREME curly hair. I always used mousse and never thought I would like gel, but I found one. I don't necessary like their shampoo or conditioners but the gel is PEFECT

It's Druide http://www.druide.ca/

I order directly from the net. I don't know if they ship to the States (I am in Canada). They also resell in health food stores.

Anyways, I love it. It's been may be a year that I discovered it.

Hope this helps

The only place I've found Phyto is Sephora, otherwise you have to buy it online. It's not very expensive, about $20 for a jar, but the jar lasts at least 6 mos.

Phyto's other products are ridiculously expensive--the shampoos & conditioners come in these little bottles & tubes that are at least $25. Also it really bothers me that they sell a lot of their stuff in glass bottles. I'm not a huge environmentalist (more like "environmentally aware") but for a company that sells "all natural" products it seems ridiculous that they undo it by packaging it in glass. Also glass is more expensive so naturally it makes the product more expensive.

But I still swear by their Beauty Styling Cream. And the jar is plastic. ;-)

Redken has a good product for curly/wavy hair. Suave has the cheaper version of it, and works really well! It's Suave Professionals Healthy Curls (greenish blue bottle).

Matrix has the sleek line (mentioned by another poster) that works for frizzy hair. Suave also made a cheaper copy that works! It's SUave Professionals Sleek -- orange bottles.

I have used both of the Suaves and works really well with my wavy, frizzy hair. I also use their creme style -- not greasy at all.

Aveda Perfume Brilliant - Humectant Pomade.........the only one I've found that I like.......although I hate wearing my hair curly and usually straighten it cuz my curls and waves don't go the way I like! It looks too wild and poofy and I hate wearing my glasses with my hair curly. Feel like a dork. I guess I have a lot of hang ups!! Yikes!

This is great! Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to try some of them out and I'll let you know how I get on!

:D

I had super short hair for many, many years and when I grew it out about a year ago, it was curly. WTH?! I always had straight hair! Anyway, I've had to learn how to take care of curly hair, which is very different from straight hair. My curls are very loose and don't start until about the tops of my ears. My hair is also very, very fine, as another poster stated. What works for me is Redken Curl Refiner. It's only in salons and it's not cheap ($15/bottle where I live--the Midwest). But, it lasts at least 6 months and works great for my hair. I either let it air dry and then run my fingers through it when it's dry. Or, I blow dry on low for a few minutes, then let it dry the rest of the way, then run my fingers through it. It doesn't leave my hair crunchy.

I also did a lot of reading on this web site when I first discovered I had curly hair:

I use Matrix Curl.life contouring milk. It's a cream, not a gel, so it doesn't leave your hair crunchy. I just put it in my towel-dried hair and let it air dry. At least, that's what I do when I'm too lazy to blow-dry and flat iron. :)

I have very long, very curly hair. I LOVE Graham Webb curl defining gel. You can find it in either salons or on the web. It's a bit expensive ( $13.00-$16.00) but I promise it's worth it. I wouldn't know what to do if they ever discontinue it!! Doesn't make my hair too crunchy, yet holds it all day and makes it nice and "spiraly". ( is that a word? )

:)

I have searched high and low (and everywhere in between!!!) for a good product for my naturally curly hair.

I have found a combination of two products that works extremely well.

Redken Ringlet 07 Curl Protector

***and***

Pearatin Fortifying Repairative Serum (half way down the page if you go to the link)

http://www.lomaforhair.com/products_pearatin.shtml

Both in the these products together make for a wonderful, frizz-free curl unlike anything I have ever found!

The redken product I can find in any store that sells this line, the Pearatin I always special order from a local beauty supply store as I haven't found ANY stores that carry this line standard.
