For those who make oatmeal with milk

I always use fresh milk and always cook the oatmeal in the microwave for exactly 2 mins. 50 seconds and yet sometimes the milk curdles I guess? I'm not sure what the right term is but the milk sometimes smells fine and tastes fine but just destroys my oatmeal so I have to throw the whole bowl away. I'm not sure what's going on. Anyone else get this?
It's so annoying!

I will use milk in my oatmeal most of the time but I cook it on the stove in a pot...I don't have this problem...are you possibly over-cooking it?? Just a guess!

Wendy-
I cook it for exactly the same amount of time in the same microwave every morning, usually using the same brand of organic milk. And about 80% of the time it's perfect. And then the rest of the time it gets this yucky cheesy-like layer on the top that I think they call "curdling"? But I'm not sure. Anyway, it smells bad and I always throw it away.

How long does it take to cook on the stove? I can't bear the thought of having to wash a pot!

Hi Nancy,

I'll bet the milk is the variable. There are probably times when your milk is less fresh than the other 80% of the time, and maybe it can't handle the microwave process at that point.

Just a guess. :)

I make mine in the microwave with water and then add milk when the oatmeal is done. I like mine a little wet and it also helps cool it off.

Hi Nancy! That's yucky! I cook mine in a pot over the stove but instead of milk I use Rice Dream. Its rich & creamy. Just a suggestion but why not switch to Rice Dream instead of milk? Kathy:D

I cook mine on the stove top and then, you'll think I'm a pig, I eat it right out of the pot. I just sit it down on a pot holder and dig right in. I can't tell you about the milk as I make mine with water. My mom made it with water then added milk to it after it cooked.

Michele:)

I am cooking Quakers 'Old Fashioned' Oatmeal in one cup of milk, 1 small packet of sugar added.

Growing up, my mom wouldn't cook the oatmeal. We'd eat about 1 cup of oatmeal in a bowl, with milk and sugar added for breakfast. I still love it but now the whole cup has too many calories and taking only 1/2 cup seems too little food.

I cook mine with milk in the microwave, but cook it 30 seconds at a time, then stir it, then 30 seconds until it's done. Usually takes only 2 minutes, so that's 4 stirs :)
Never have any problem with it.

i use light soy milk (light chocolate soy milk actually) and cook it in the microwave.. no issues! great every time! (well.. except the couple of times i wasn't watching and it boiled all over the place *mad*

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

1/2 c regular oats and 1 c milk. Cook for 1:30. Then cook for 30 sec. more. That's what works for me.

I wonder if it has something to do with organic milk? I've gotten two cartons in the past 6 months that have little chunks. The milk smells fine, but the chunks are like slimy pieces of snot. Yuck! I've never had that happen with non-organic milk.

I think you're quite right, Marla. I have to buy the milk in small containers and always keep an extra on hand.

KathyH-
What is Dream is made of? For some reason my nutritionist has me drinking one cup of milk every morning, and I don't really feel like drinking milk in the morning, but love it in the oatmeal.

Hi Nancy-

Are you using different bowls when you cook your oatmeal or is it always the same bowl?

Depending on the type of glass, pottery, etc that your bowls are made from may affect the way the bowls conduct the heat generated from the microwaves.. Some bowls will conduct the heat nicely, while others don't. Maybe on the days that you get "curdley" milk you are actually scalding/burning the milk, thus giving you that strange flavor and curdles. Just an idea..

Take care, Lynn M.

We usually don't cook oatmeal in Germany. If we do cook it, we call it "Milchsuppe" (Milksoup) and we use 1 cup of milk and three tablespoons of oatmeal and about 1 tablespoon of sugar.

I get the water boiling in a small pot and then throw the oatmeal in on high heat and it usually is done with in 5-10 minutes. I use a non-stick pot so clean up is easy!:)

I've never made oatmeal (except for instant) in a microwave....I have do clue why not though!? LOL :p

Thanks, Lynn. Good thinking. As it happens, I bought a set of about 12 bowls that are oversized from Crate & Barrel just to make oatmeal in, and that's all I ever use.

I'm such a creature of habit, and everything is so exactly the same every day, that I'm now convinced that Marla is right. It never happens when it's a new carton of milk. I guess the milk changes on the third or fourth day of being in the fridge. I just have to keep it super fresh, or try rice or soy milk.
