I'm going to start a food journal today. I'm hoping that this will help me to eat better and help to eliminate junk food. Does this help some of you? Do you just write down everything you eat during the day? Thanks.

Joanne

Hi Joanne,

A food journal is the only way to go. It will revolutionise you ! Basically just write down EVERYTHING you eat throughout the day, and drink, and work out your calories, and fat grams if you wish. You can kind of see where you go wrong eating during the day, and therefore you can start to make changes too. I use my food journal as an exercise journal as well, and it helps sometimes to write down any thoughts or feelings you have had during the day, more so positive ones than negative ones. I also use my food journal as a weight guide too, and I copy any interesting POSITIVE info that appears on the forum, too (Annette posted brilliant motivation points under the thread 'Scale Haters Unite'). I also carry mine around with me too in my handbag, so I can refer to it at any time.

Hope this has been of some help

Anna :)

I keep a food journal. It helps me to be very conscious of what I eat and drink. I write everything: what I eat, drink, and my exercises. I am not obsessive about it at all though, I enjoy doing it, and if I skip couple of days, due to my busy schedule or extreme tiredness, it doesn't bother me.

If you needed some calorie info, if and when you are reporting your calories, you might want to try calorieking.com they are a good source of food content information.

I think keeping a food journal can be a great step towards a healthy, happy life style.
Congrats and good luck!

I keep a food journal as well, writing down everything that passes my lips. You will be amazed how quickly mindless snacking will stop once you start recording your daily meals/snacks and beverages.
It keeps me accountable for my eating throughout the day, and helps me focus on areas (nutritionally) I may not be getting enough of.

I use Fitday for my food journal, and it helped me immensely when I started using it. It is a pain in the butt at first but worth it, at least for a few weeks to see where you stand as far as fat, carb and protein breakdown, as well as total calories. It even tells you if you meet your nutrition requirements! I love it.

When I use mine I track protein grams, carb grams, fat grams, and fiber. The book BodyRx has a clever way of ordering food into categories too. All techniques that force learning about food are good.

When I find out something is really good for me I start to like it, and I even find I often develop a taste for it.
