For the 1st time in 5 years, I....

Went to see a movie, in a theatre! Having babies puts that stuff on hold.

I now know what our society is doing to get so fat and out of shape! Man, oh man...all I could hear was people crunching and eating...the smell of soda and butter filled the air! Then I thought to myself...this is why they are so out of shape! They are here all the time eating this crap and totally sedentary!

NO WONDER teens are heavier! They are the movies eating sh$t and sitting on their arse!

I had no clue how I was going to *sit* for that long...that is a long time to not move! The only time I watch t.v. is while on the treadmill (for the most part).

The movies...not for me! Hey! I have an invention idea! Instead of filling the movie theatre with seats...fill it with treadmills! Crap, someone already thought of that (kind of)...it's called a "gym"! Shucks!

Seriously, if they had that set up, I'd go to the movies more often! With all that sound, I think it would be awesome! Who's with me! (YES, I have a *protein shake buzz* right now):p

Sarah,
I remember this. We hardly ever went to a movie. My dh now realizes that this is the only way I sit through a whole movie. I like moving around and when we rent or watch PPV on cable I get up and go do things around the house. I really am not one to sit for the full length of a movie:)A treadmill would be great.

Sarah, I've been saying this for many years now. Look, when I was a kid there was not XBox or whatever it's called, no internet & it was virtually safe to run around in your neighborhood. I remember being a latch-key kid & going outside to play after I got home from school. We played hide-n-go- seek, TAG or whatever. But I distinctly remember just always RUNNING around. Sad to say, it's not true anymore. Yes, partly from the Video games or TV or Aol Messenger, but really, now, you just can't allow your kids to step outside & play around unless you are close enough or can supervise. So, unless you are a stay at home omm, which many aren't then it's kind of hard to teach your kids to stay off their butt.

Another thing. My kid goes to school, but she has to be driven, no matter how close. She's got books, musical equipment, etc to carry home. But most of all, you never know if perverts are out there. I hire a Kiddy Taxi to take her to & fro. Whereas, I always walked, when I was a kid. I can't risk that something might happen to the only kid I have. Needless to say, that cuts into her physical fitness points right? Also, if you care to know, there is a very real reason, why I don't believe "things happen to other people."

I remember those days too. My mom had to pack a lunch for me during summer vacation because I would be out of the house by 7AM and wouldn't be back until dinner time...no time to be running home in the middle of playing to eat lunch what with bikes, dodge ball, kick ball, tag, looking for lizards in the woods and other adventures awaiting.

I feel the same way! First of all, I can't sit still that long. Secondly, the food is too unhealthy and too tempting. I have gone to the movies maybe once every two years for the past ten, but when I go, I have to have movie popcorn! Take it from a girl that became overweight at just about her mid-late teen years, the movies are not a good influence! And things have even changed a lot since I was a teen. The movies here have nachos, hot dogs, candy by the pound (at SIX dollars per pound, mind you), etc. They built a new theater there and it is like a carnival in the food section!

The other issue w/the movies for me is that I am *too big*!!! I am so uncomfortable there b/c of my height so I'd rather be here, stretched out on my couch, under a blanket (once I settle in) with the puppies!

I hear you on this one! I sometimes have to shut everything down and order BF's 11 year old to go outside, even when her friends are over. Then they come in five minutes later and say "we are going to play XBox again." "OH NO you aren't! OUT!" It is also sometimes the parents to blame with this. Her mom uses all of these items as a babysitter so she will often choose them over being outside and doing the things that kids "should" do. When I was a kid, we were out until my mo dragged us in at night }(

Cathy,

I use to do the same kind of things. We use to look for turtles in the woods. We were also busy building forts/clubs and posting signs "No Boys Allowed". My mother sent us outside after breakfast and she would come out with watermelon for us to eat as a snack later in the afternoon. I think we ate Honeycombs cereal though. Oh, well. We also ate ham sandwiches, not all the crap the kids eat now adays. Later in the day we were allowed to come in. I thank my mom for that because now I can't stand to be inside especially when the weather is so nice. There is always so much to keep us busy...no time for down time is what I say!

Sarah, that is a great idea!!! I went the movies yesterday with my dh as well, we seen Monster in Law. Great movie!

There was this very overweight couple there, actually, many overweight people, but these two were unreal. The woman was sitting and the guy wanted her to look at something. She yelled, "My legs hurt, I can't get up right now." I looked over at her and seen how large she was and thought, No freakin' wonder your legs hurt, they have to support your HUGE body!

This other couple could not get comfortable in the seat, they were wider than the theater seats. Had tons of food there to eat, more than only two people should have.

Yea, I know why Americans are the most overweight than they ever have been. Shall I start on restaurant portions????

I guess you are saying something bad happened to you? Or someone in your family? :( I'm sorry! And I'm right there, too. Once it happens to YOU, you realize how quickly life can change.

As for kids and fitness, I agree that parents are in a tough spot sometimes. My son is outside all the time and my little one is dancing all the time. We walk to the park often as a whole family, but my older daughter would much rather draw and sit at the computer all day. Thankfully, she likes Cathe videos and is now hooked on getting 30 minutes a day. My problem is in middle school, P.E. is an option!! Nooooo!!!

BF and I hardly ever go to the movies because of the cost. At more than $10/ticket, we'd rather wait for the DVD to come out. We can buy it for less on sale and watch the movie at our own pace and more than once.

I can't stand going to the movies during the day--it makes me feel like I've completely missed the day. Plus, I get horribly fidgety just sitting there for hours on end.

My BF thinks I'm crazy, but I *have to* get outside every day, no matter what the weather is. It's been easier for me since we moved into NYC, because unless you can spend a fortune on cabs, you're forced to walk, even if it's just to the subway or bus stop. When I lived in the suburbs, it would drive me nuts in the winter trying to figure out ways to go outside and find something to do. I blame my mother for this--when I was growing up, she'd kick us out of the house and tell us to go play. We weren't allowed to sit in front of the tv all day.

Added: Wow, Amy--I can't believe PE is an option. That's scary. I suppose kids could burn off energy at lunch, but do you really think that most kids will these days?

Man, oh man...all I could hear was people crunching
>and eating...the smell of soda and butter filled the air!

Are you sure it wasn't "butter-flavored topping" (kind of like motor oil, but buttery?:D )

I haven't been to the movies for a long time (I prefer to rent DVD's at home where people don't talk, and the floors aren't sticky--most of the time!), but I remember how BIG the servings are at the snack bar. HUGE portions of food. And popcorn (which could be a healthful snack if air-popped) smothered in yucky pseudo-butter "goo." I've read the calorie count on movie theater popcorn, and it was outrageous. I don't remember the number, but I recall it was huge (like two meals worth, maybe?)

I don't get to go the movies very often, but when I do, I get some popcorn. (small bag) :p I never eat it any other time, so once every couple of months won't hurt me. :)

I like the theatres near me because of the stadium seating. Very cool!

Amy, didn't mean to sound so ominous. Actually, my experience was, even back then, "the safer, quieter days," I was playing outside one day with my friend. I must have been 8 or 9. I can't remember. She went inside for a drink of water & I stayed outside on her sidewalk step. This was a step closer to the street rather than to her house. Anyway, a guy in a green truck drove down the street & waved at me. I waved hi back, since I was taught to be polite. He must have drove around the block & once again waved at me. I waved back. Third time, I kid you not he drove by & waved & smiled. HMMMM. It was kind of weird to me. I decided to go to my house, right next door and as I leaped on my front porch he had made his fourth drive around the block & drove right up MY drive way. Thankfully, as I leaped unto my porch, my older 16 y/o cousin was coming out to call for me. I don't even remember why. The guy pulled out & drove away. SOMEONE was looking out for me that day, I have no doubt. I also tend to watch too much CourtTV, American Justice, Cold Case Files, & have always had the mindset, that I am NOT SPECIAL. Bad things can happen to me too.

Needless to say, with all these child abductions/killings, I can't blame any parent for not letting them out to play.

Yikes! Scary!! My sister got hit by a car (drunk, hit and run) when we were outside playing. She was expected to die and was in ICU for 6 mos and recovery was long, but she is actually fully recovered now. I was 10 and she was 3, so I felt responsible for a long time. Every day it crosses my mind to count my blessings and BE CAREFUL!

There is NO WAY they would have time to burn off energy or calories at lunch! No time!! She is in the honors program and they seem to think that there is no time for both honors and P.E. I'm about to throw a big fit!!! Basically, I'm having to do her P.E. at home, because she won't do it without me. Understandable at 6th grade, but still....she should have P.E. required! Younger kids are required to have it up until 5th grade, I think, but middle school (which is CRUCIAL, I think) is not required to take it. High school is only requiring 2 semesters any time between 9th and 12th grade.

The idea of treadmill theaters is cool. I don't see in todays society that it will happen. I go to the movies every couple of weeks and I would love it! However the people I go with would not. Any way back to the whole theater scene...yes what they serve there is gross and fattening but I go and take my own healthy snaks. I have no problem resisting junk that is way over priced! I like going and if I get antsy I just get up and go to the back and stand up a bit. I do however agree even movie prices are HIGH and it's a crap shoot whether or not the movie willl be worth it.

DH and I go to matinee's once or twice a month. We really enjoy it. Especially in FLorida in the summertime where it's between 90 and 100 degrees outside in the afternoon x(

I don't feel a need to eat anything when we go. We go to the movie to watch the movie...not to eat. Besides, their food and drinks are so expensive x(

And a treadmill....NO THANKS. I believe there is a time and a place for everything. I enjoy relaxing as well as working out.

I don't know why some of you feel you HAVE TO eat when you see a movie?!

And if you want to talk about feeding kids junk at the movies. Just look at the vending machines available to them AT SCHOOL! That's appalling to me. x(

P.S. Anyway, we usually go to thriller type movies so my heart rate is up anyway :7

I don't go to the movies all that often either. The last thing I've seen was "Sponge Bob" with my son. Once in a while I buy some popcorn but I can't believe the price that people will pay for junk. $3.50 for a soda or a bag of candy, that is outrageous!

As for kids and fitness, I guess I'm lucky. My 4 year old loves to be outside. Yesterday while we were at the drag races, he rode his bike for 5 hours (I kid you not). And when he wasn't riding his bike he was running. When we got home I thought he'd be ready for bed, nope, he spent another hour outside riding his 4-wheeler. I think some parents let the tv or video games "babysit" their kids rather then spending the time to get them up and moving. I make it a priority to get outside everynight after dinner with my son whether it be playing tag, kickball, baseball or letting him ride his bike.
