Hi,

I have committed myself to run the LA Marathon in March 2003 (yippeeeeee!!).

I would like some advice from the runners here who have completed a marathon. I have run a 5K and a 10K and was running about 20 mpw, averaging a 9 minute pace.

Also, did you continue doing lower body strength work during marathon training?

Thanks in advance.

Hi! Since you haven't had any replies I wanted to suggest that you post your question over at VF (www.videofitness.com). Your post reminded me of some marathon questions I had and I just went and posted them. You could also try runners world. They get a little flame happy sometimes, so I don't visit their board much.

Hi,
You sound like you are doing good so far. 20 miles per week/9 min. mile pace is about where I was before I started training for the Marine Corps Marathon. I found a great marathon training program in Runner's World Magazine. I trained for about 3 1/2 months, never really running more than 6 miles during the week, and then on Saturdays I'd do a long run (usually around 13 miles), but I don't think I ever ran more than about 15 miles before I actually ran the marathon. I ended up finishing it in 4 1/2 hrs., which is about a 10 1/2 minute mile pace. I was never much for lower body weight work, so I did not do it at all while I was training for the marathon. I did keep up the upper body work though. But, like everything else, I'm sure everyone is different. If you can do the lower body work, and still finish your runs, that might be better for you...I'd try it and see how it feels...
Whatever you do, good luck and keep the training up, because you will be so proud of yourself when you cross that finish line!
