Food Choices Question

Around the 4 o'clock hour (at the end of the school day) when I get home, I am VERY hungry. I usually eat some dry cereal or peanuts, but find myself eating too much of them. I think I might not be eating enough during the day to get me through until dinner.

Here's pretty much what I eat daily, only dinner changes.

Breakfast: 1 cup oatmeal w/some walnuts and 1/2 banana and coffee.

Morning snack: ww toast w/natural peanut butter or ww crackers w/peanut butter

Lunch: Med. size salad w/a little bit of the "good" oil for dressing, a tomato basil wrap from Gardenburger, and low fat/sugar yogurt.

Snack (about 2-3): South Beach high protein bar (about 140 calories)

So, what the heck am I doing wrong? Is lunch too light? Do I need more protein? Any recommendations on what to eat between classes at 2-3 if that snack is the problem?

I don't get hungry at night. Just at around 4 o'clock time. I eat dinner at 6:30, so waiting until then to eat is a long wait.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. I think it's the sedentary weekdays that do it to me. On the weekends I'm more active and eat much less and don't get hungry as often. Sitting around all day seems to result in a lot of hunger for me too. Are you sedentary during the day?

ETA: What level of school are you in?

Are you in a place where you can push either the gardenburger or salad to around 4:00? I have this problem, but find that I have it a lot less if I split my lunch and eat half of it at lunch, the other half around 4ish.

I can't split up my lunch. At least not during the school day. I think if I didn't eat but 1/2 of it I would really be hungry.

I move around a lot during the day, so I don't think that could be the problem. On the weekend, I work a lot in the yard or around the house. I hardly ever just sit. I wish!

I just wonder if I'm not eating the right mix of foods. Who knows!

Nancy- I teach junior high English.

Any more fruit in the mix? Try adding an apple to the protein bar to help balance out the carb/protein ratio. HTH!

Good idea, Amy. I will try that tomorrow. South Beach protein bars prob. aren't the best choice! I might have to think of something else to replace that. It' easy and mess-free.

The first thing that sticks out at me is protein. Seems you are not getting enough during the day and that could leave you hungry much quicker. Is there a way to get some egg whites in the morning, maybe throw in a tuna kit or cottage cheese/fruit, hardboiled egg for snack? I think staggering those kinds of foods during the day will help you feel full longer.

My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She's ninety-seven now, and we don't know where the hell she is.

Here are some suggestions:

Mix in a serving of vanilla protein powder in your oatmeal (after it's cooked).

I don't see enough protein at lunch. I would shoot for 4-6 ounces of a lean protein. I would also replace the Gardenburger wrap with some veggies.

There are some lower sugar protein bar options available than what is offered by South Beach. I also would add an apple in addition to the protein bar.

Hope this helps.
