Flooring in your workout area

We have an extra bedroom that we've turned into our "gym" it has a pull up bar some free weights, bar bell and a treadmill. Right now we just have the original carpet in there and are looking into taking it out and replacing it with laminate flooring.

We had someone come out and measure our room and he told us that having those weights and the treadmill is too much weight for the floors and that it might buckle. I'm interested to hear if you guys have problems with your workout area floors if you have laminate wood.

Thanks!!
Heather

I think that is a load of crap. I installed Pergo in my other house about 10 years ago (yes, myself, and pregnant part of the time!!). There are so many good options out there now, and even easier to install. I never had a problem with it, no matter what was in there. What if you were putting it in a living room with one of those big entertainment centers, a couch or two, table, etc. Now THAT would be heavy, but I bet nothing would be mentioned. Some people see weights and think crazy stuff. You don't have a gym, with thousands of pounds of weights!! You can also get good bouncy underlayment stuff for that, or at least you used to be able to. It takes away the sound of more of a hardwood floor, but would be more comfy for exercise. In this house, we have hardwoods and I have all of my stuff on them. No problems at all. I'm going to try to post a pic so you can get an idea of what I have on the floors.

Actually, easier to just follow this link: http://picasaweb.google.com/meowracer1/200805MyGym?authkey=-S-qPExdBv8

Ignore the pics of DVDs and extra stuff - my brother lives in Argentina and hadn't seen it all put together - he saw bits and pieces stored here and there, and I wanted to show him how I had finally gotten it all together!

Thank you SOOO much!! I think we decided to install it ourselves to save soem money (and I'm 17 weeks pregnant! ha) but i was upset when the guy said that we couldn't do it because of a few weights.

Thanks for setting my mind at ease...i knew it sounded to weird to be true.

Good for you! It is so easy. The hardest part is getting the carpet, carpet tacks, and foam stuff up! Next comes leveling your floor (the concrete) - be sure to not skip that part. Not hard, but boring b/c you are ready to get your floor down! :)

When you think about people putting their big beds on these floors, dressers, refrigerators ... it just doesn't make sense what the guy told you!

Good luck - have fun :)

We also have laminate in our workout room, self installed. It's been 10 years and no problems whatsoever. we had carpeting before & it smelled like gym socks after a couple years. laminate is much easier to keep clean, just damp mop. You'll love it. You can dent it if you drop weights on it though.

I do not have a workout room, but I did want to say that I have become an expert at installing laminate and that stuff is TOUGH! We have put Pergo in several areas in our house and couldn't be happier. I would definitely use it for my workout room (one day!!).
