FLOAM mini-rant

Have any of you bought this stuff for your kids?

We got 3 tubs as a gift. I thought it looked kinda cool and would be a good alternative to Playdoh since no little pieces would drop off or get mashed into clothes. WRONG!!!!

What horrible stuff!

It was so sticky the girls could barely do anything with it. Their hands after 10 minutes of washing finally have that nasty goo off of them. It smelled like slimey glue to boot.

Now its stuck to my pine dining room table and I scrubbed and scrubbed to get it clean.

What junk! I'm just glad I'm not the one who paid for it!!

Oh, yeah!! My dd got some for her bday and it was NOT like the commercials. And don't get me started on Moon Sand.... I didn't buy it either!!

What's wrong with Moon Sand? I never saw a commercial for it, but my dd has it and loves it. Her preschool teacher had it in class also.

My kiddos got a ton of moon sand for Christmas and I can't stand the stuff. It is sooooo messy. It gets all over the place and my neurotically neat 4 year old freaks out because it sticks to his hands. I'm glad we haven't ventured into floam, and after reading this I know we won't! It's good ol' Play-Doh for us.

Have you guys ever made homemade play-doh?? My Mom gave me the recipe she used to use when I was little, it's really easy. Let me know and I'll post it!! For some reason, I HATE the smell of real play-doh... and this one just smells like dough & salt!! ;-) (cause that's basically what it is!) My kids love it, and it's easier to use with cookie cutters or to roll with a rolling pin. Another suggestion.... I give them each their own cookie sheet and then they can pretend to bake the cookies... and VERY easy clean up!

I bought moon sand! UGH! It is soooo messy. Yay, it just disapeared also. How does play dough, floam and moon sand do that? I have never purchased play dough. SOmeone got it for him at a b-day party. OMG, SOMEONE bought my son one of those chocolate fountains for his b-day. Talk about a nasty mess. I let him use it once then it went into the garage sale.

They should have a 'for ages 16 and over' label on this stuff. I've heard lots of folks say it's horrible for young children. My 17 year old daughter Marley made a heart model out of FLOAM for a biology project. She did a great job but found it, at times, very frustrating to work with.

Take Care

We haven't had any problems with Floam at our house. I bought some for my girls a year ago or so and my DD 6 made a cute pencil holder with it and I thought it was easy to deal with. ???? I have been tempted to try the Moon Sand but was going to wait until my girls are a little older. We have made homemade playdoh as well and it is fun. We also made edible playdoh, have you tried that? Spendy but tasty. :9 We've also made our own blubber or something similar to silly putty. Has anyone tried that?

Sorry you all had problems with Floam!

Jess, I am actually the Play-doh mom at Kindergarten! They ask me to make it when their supply gets yucky.

LD, My SIL bought a chocolate fountain for my DD when she turned FOUR! Now, tell me why a 4-yo. needs her own c. fountain?! PS - She did NOT have kids at the time!

My son had both - moon sand & floam. He was very disappointed b/c it is nothing like you see on the commercials. I threw it in the trash. Now play-doh, I don't mind that stuff at all.

LOL @ Play-doh Mom!! I told another Mom that they could *make* play-doh and they looked at me like I had 2 heads. I guess home-made stuff just isn't good enough anymore. *rolls eyes*

A chocolate fountain.... you can tell when they get gifts from people that *don't* have kids!!
