Flexibility

Okay, I'm working on my strength, my endurance and I'm doing my step aerobics. That doesn't leave much, if any, time, but I know that flexibility is also a very important component of being fit too.

I am really enjoying working with the stability ball and I would love to find a video that will help me become more flexible and target core strength, if possible. I was thinking of maybe one of those pilates on the ball workouts or something like that.

So, fit folks, what workout do you recommend for me for flexibility and core strength that won't take a lot of time? I'm already spending a lot of time on strength training and cardio workouts.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

(P.S. Editing to say that yes, I have been reading the reviews on Video Fitness, but they are a bit dated and I still want to know which videos you guys recommend, particularly the ones you feel passionately about!)

I like the audio yoga cd from Shiva Rea called Yoga Sanctuary. It actually posts a post and pre workout yoga stretch program you can do. I have added power yoga class as well but it can be like another toning workout sometimes. Since this is a cd, you can easily take it with you when you travel as well. I know it is not a stretch tape but I love it for stretching and elongating.
I am looking forward to everyone's suggestions on this topic as well.
Thanks
Sheila

For efficient stretching, Tamilee Webb's videos are my top choice. There are 2 "beginners videos"; 1 has 3 10 minute stretch routines, the 2nd is a 1/2 hour stretch & relaxation. Don't worry about the "beginner" title. The 10 min segments are easy to tack onto another workout or while dinner is cooking.

I also like Karen Voight's yoga stretching routines on the Sleek Physique DVD.

There's a recent thread in the open discussion about stability ball workouts. If it's core work you want, consider Moira Stott. I'll dust off Voight's ball workout - I think there was a lot of stretching after some silly bouncing on the ball.

I use pilates & yoga for flexiblity but they do require a time investment.

I'm being forced to take a break from cardio, so I'm focusing a lot more on flexibility. The tapes I'm using are Method Toning Essentials (I always feel tall and willowy when I'm done, and I'm hardly that), Method Target Specifics (this one is new), Yoga for Flexibility, and Total Yoga. I think I'm still lacking in tapes for upper body flexibility, and I would like to find a yoga tape that concentrates on hip openers.

Anyway, I like these tapes. They're not Cathe, but they're not bad.

Hi Nancy,

I've noticed a definite improvement in my flexibility since I started doing 20 minutes of yoga each morning. I use Living Yoga's Stress Relief Yoga and A.M. Yoga for Beginners. Doesn't take too much time and feels great. I added yoga to my fitness routine for stress relief and relaxation - the increased flexibility has been the icing on the cake.

Nancy,

I do a lot of my flexibility work while reading to my kids, so if you do any reading or watching TV this might work for you. I just get into one of my favorite stretch positions: seated straddle leg, butterfly, one-leg stretched out in front, etc. and slowly work on leaning forward while I'm reading. I go slow and gentle and end up holding these for maybe about 5 min. each while I read. I don't think there's any need to hold them so long--I just happen to read to my kids for a long time and I like having something to do with my body while I do. I also get in some stability ab work during our reading time. --Karen
